This is my first post, so go easy...ha ha. This is a mountain in the Rocky Mountain National Park that I shot yesterday morning during sun up.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks...

Welcome to POTN first of all.

The pictures looks like it could have potential, but the forground and mid ground is just to dark. The mountain on the other hand is perfect. I'm pretty sure that it was do to the large amount of light the snow on the mountain was reflecting, that the rest of the picture is so dark (or perhaps a large cloud). Kind of the same idea as taking a sunset shot with the sun in the frame......it darkens the rest of the shot. A GND filter may be able to help with this type of shot by limiting the light hitting the sensor from the mountain area, but allowing enough light from the rest to light it properly. This way, the whole picture should be evenly lit.

Try having a look at this thread for some great examples of how using GND or ND filters can help in getting a great landscape shot (can be used for other styles too), when a particular shot needs it.

Post Your Graduated Neutral Density Sample Shots Please

Hope to see more shots from ya. :)

Great view...

I will agree with the dark foreground.....This is a tuff shot without blowing out the snow..

Also, the trees are chopped off at mid stalk so the photo is not anchored.. Either re-compose so there is more of the overall scene with the trees rooted, and open up a bit for some detail in the darker foreground, or crop the trees out altogether and bring up the dark mountain in PP..

.... Got some cameras; got some glass ..... I just need one more of each.....

Welcome to POTN! You have image editing OK turned on in your profile so here is a quick edit using Photoshop CS shadow/highlight adjustment. Let me know if you like the change in the image. It really brought out some detail in the foreground shadows. Keep on shooting and hanging around this board. There are lots of very helpful folks on here. You can learn a lot.

I like the edit better. I just do not light the light to dark to light again. Just my opinion.

Love the edit, can you give some more details. I just got Adobe PhotoShop Elements about a month ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again!

Sure. As I said I have Photoshop CS and I'm not sure if you have the same shadow/highlight adjustment in Elements. If you do it will be found at the top of the screen under Image -> Adjustments -> Shadow/Highlight. Here are the settings I have set up by default and these are the same as I used on your shot. If you have the preview checkbox marked it will show you how it adjusts the image as you go.

BTW: My sister would love to visit Cheyenne - she's a nut about cowboys

Thank you! I appreciate your time. Will try this on a couple of more. These pictures were taken at the Rocky Mtn National Park. I will be up there again in a couple of weeks looking for more Elk and hopefully catch a couple of Bighorn Sheep. I did post a couple of Elk pictures in the Wildlife section if you want to take a peak.

Thanks to everyone for your great critiques and will be posting

Thanks John for the edit. I'm new to the forum and didn't realize you could do this. Here is my take ( curves, match color only - real quick edit ) What do you think SS308?
