Could anyone recommend a good brand of AA battery for flash (and AAA for torch) use?

I have re-chargeable Uniross and Battech batteries for my 580 EXII and they aren't great. They are acceptable for occasional use, but for a proper flash photography session they won't last very long at all - maybe 30 flashes or so.

I use the same brands of AAA batteries for my head torch - and hand torch for night photography - but they don't last long for that either! I should be getting around 100 hours from a set of AAAs in my head torch, but my Battech batteries only last about 2 - 3 hours before I need to re-charge them.

By the way, I use a good quality Ansmann Energy 8 Plus charger, so the problem isn't a crappy charger not doing its job!

Thanks

Mike

:-)

no doubt about the eneelops. first of all they are slow discharge. second of all they hold a constant discharge rate quite well (better than most rechargeables). The other brand in the same league are the MAHA slow discharge.

I use www.thomas-distributing.com (external link) for my batteries. a clarification: i am not in any way associated with them, except as a happy customer.

I use Duracell 2650mAh NiMH for my off-camera flashes since I empty them the same or following day of charging. I use Duracell Pre-Charged in my on-camera flash so it's almost always ready to go. Now that prices on eneloops and Duracell Pre-Charged are about the same as standard NiMH, when I need to replace the latter it'll be with the former.

I was a complete Alkaline junky, wouldn't put Nimh's in my flash until someone convinced me to try the Eneloops. In the past year & half I have pretty much replaced all my existing Nimh's with Eneloops. This goes way beyond my flash units, I have Eneloops in our Wii controllers (a match made in heaven there), kid's toys, flashlights, FRS radios, kid's P&S cameras, etc. I carry an extra set for my 580EX-2 in my bag, though I rarely have to use a backup set.

If you use your flash a lot and regularly, you might benefit from some higher capacity Nimh's other than Eneloops. If you use it infrequently and it sits in your bag for days, weeks (or even months) before each use, the Eneloops are for you. None of this picking up the flash and crossing your fingers. ..

If you search around a bit on Amazon, you can find some decent deals.

I was using Duracell 2650 mAh and they were pretty good but I found shelf life to be terrible and after a while they became less efficient and problematic.

I don't use AA's for my flashes anymore but if I were to buy new rechargeable AA's I'd get the Sanyo Eneloops.

I got some Eneloops from amazon the other day, i've yet to get a chance to try them out. From what i've heard though, there is no comparison.

Look at the Mah, I use 2700 / 2800's for my flashes and they do last a fair while with good recharge rates

I had a set of energizers and they failed completely after a few months in my older Fuji Camera (while on trip no less) I had 2 sets of 4 AA and both couldn't hold a charge for more then 2 days with minimal use.

Eneloops +1.

Energizer 2500mAh? I've got probably 24 or so of them. I need to get some more in the next couple of months.
