I saw the Tamron 18-250 at BestBuy at clearance price for $409. I always research before buying and I'm confused by what I see. Apparently this lens can only be used effectively on APS-C cameras, not full-frame like my 5D.

However, when I go to the Tamron site, I see no such explicit language! I had to get it laid out for me in a Bob Atkins review. Not all reviews of this lens make this distinction. The Tamron site uses marketing language which shows 18-250 and 28-400 equivalencies, but it never really says that the lens will not work well at all on a full-frame camera. The Bob Atkins review uses the statement: "While the lens can be mounted on any EOS SLR camera, on full frame models it shows significant vignetting at all focal lengths." Which equates to "Sucks eggs on a 5D".

Here's the Tamron product page LINK HERE (external link)

Please help me see what I'm missing when shopping for lenses. There must be something at the Tamron site that I'm missing. Some text or icon that I should be looking to avoid when shopping for full-frame compatible lenses.

It's not full frame.

You aren't going to find a full frame lens that starts at 18 and goes past 35-40. It would be HUGE!!

If you want a good superzoom for the 5d, your best bet would be the Tamron 28-300 VC.

Thanks. Yes. I'm getting that it's not full-frame, but what I'm NOT getting is explicity verbage from the Tamron site that it's not full-frame. I feel as though I'm missing something at the Tamron site. Something that says "crop-frame only."

From the Tamron web site:

"Di-II Lenses
Lenses designed for digital SLR cameras with smaller imagers
(see Quick Guide)"

"Di (Digitally Integrated) Lenses
Lenses designed for superior use with digital SLR cameras and conventional cameras."

The 18-200mm is a Di II lens

Ok.

DI => FF OK
Di-II => FF Not OK

My problem is I go too quickly from Site Root to Specific Product Page without reading the fine print on the All Lenses page.

It'd be nice if there was something obvious on the product page itself. As it turns out, if you hover over the "Di-II" icon on the bottom of the page, you get the text "Lenses for Digital Cameras Only" which I have to remember means "Film / Full-Frame Need Not Apply". It takes a bit of digging to understand this.

Here's their Lens FAQ page which finally explains it all to me: LINK HERE (external link)

Thanks for the help, guys.
