As much as I hate Ritz. There is one inside a Boscov's department store here. I was looking in their counter while waiting for my wife. They have a tiny flash for sale for only $14. It has a light sensor on top of it so it can work as a optical slave. It has almost no controls. But for $14 I may get a few and try them out. Im thinking gelled slaves lighting the background on location. For $14 you really cant go too wrong.

Been there and done that. Had lots of fun with them too. I actually used to take 2 or 3 to a family get together and place around the main area we were all in and use my then Sony mavica to trigger them and light the place up and every one in it. At the time I thought I was quite brilliant with my little $15 dollar salves. It really was fun. Other peoples flash would trigger them too though.

I will not be using them in public... well, I mean with other shooters arround. But my first one will be modified right away. Basically I am going to take out the flash tube and extend the wires so the flash can be placed inside of things. So the unit till be the box as it comes, but with a 3-4 foot tether on the tube. I have a few ideas I want to try. And if it kills the flash.... well, it was only $14, but i got a few cool shots.

I will most likley get 3 more to do some strobist stuff. I know they are not powerfull to overpower the sun, and that is not what I want. I want to use them in the shot. they will glare but I dont think they will be strong enough to wash anything out. One example is the current 'Practical Photographer' (Feb) magazine that has 14 pages about off camera flash techniques. There is one image of a guy/girl with 2 flashes behind them fireing into the camera in frame.
