Hmm this is weird. I shipped my camera, and tracking says The destination signed for it... but when i track the work order on canon's website, for the past 2 days it says "pending arrival". is this just "normal" canon Canada tardiness? I shipped it to Mississauga.

I didnt' know you could track work orders on Canon Canada's website! How?
After dealing with some of the stupidity at Canon Canada (like them saying they don't have my receipt, then shipping back my camera with said receipt), I wouldn't put this past them.

I asked this as well this afternoon. It is insured (or so the rep stated and I asked him twice) to ship UPS ground to VA. He told me that is where are all of these are being sent to...

Thanks SBK1. UPS also confirmed that the camera would be insured when I dropped it off tonight.

First you need a canon account which has a registered product(s).

http://canon.ca …index-customersupport.asp (external link)

then u create a work order number from pressing "request or track repair" then pressing "repair request" . this generates a new work order for your camera associated with a serial #.

then you ship your camera to canon with your new print label work order.

now u can check out the "status" by loggingg back in and clicking on the "Track the Status of an Existing Repair"

Why..???

If a calibration adjustment is what it takes then why would you insist on having hardware replaced even if it was not necessary?

I'd be satisfied if it fixed a problem, regardless of whether it was replacing hardware or re-calibrating the camera. Whatever works.......

Sure, whatever works, I agree with that.

Canon has however calibrated my camera three times now, and that's why I doubt a fourth time is the answer. But we'll see, maybe they have a new and improved calibration method.

Well, yeah, if there have been three previous attempts I guess one would start to be suspicions of another "calibration"

I don't know exactly what they are doing this time around but nothing I've heard/read indicates they're doing any hardware replacement.

I think if after 3 attempts I'd be requesting the camera be replaced instead of just recalibrated again and again and again. Seems like Canon has been doing that in some cases, can't hurt to ask.

I did suggest a replacement some time ago but they wanted me to send the camera in for yet another servicing. I declined since I couldn't imagine they had anything new to offer after three attempts. Since they now have some new info and/or procedure I'm going to let them have another go at it.

I think it may be placebo. I've actually never seen my MK3 hunt in low light... it rocks in low light actually, better than any camera I've tried... any brand.

But,good news is better than bad.

Mine "micro-hunts" alot in low light/low contrast situations (concerts) with for instance the 50/1.2. It's like a hyper-active squirrel high on caffeine. This is before the fix (haven't sent it for the fix yet). With the 2.8 zooms, it has never felt especially solid, either.

Has anyone heard anything about the fix itself yet? I haven't seen anything to say if it's a hardware replacement, another calibration, or whatever? I'm assuming that the recently realeased firmware update is involved too, it seems too much of a coincidence not to be.

It would be nice if Canon came clean and actually said what it involved. But maybe that's asking too much? If the fix works I don't suppose it really matters, but I'd still prefer to know.

Westfall didnt really comment on the whole service notice or firmware update... but he did answer : "It is also very important to begin collecting subject tracking data by starting the AF system with the manually selected point positioned over the subject for about one second before releasing the shutter. "

http://www.digitaljournalist.org/issue0903/tech-tips.html (external link)

this whole 1-second pre-capture , i don't recall it in the manual, but i have always done this anyway for no better reason than to "settle" down the AF. i have not owned a previous 1D, so do you guys who have owned mark2(n)'s had to do this 1-second trick? it seems like canon just recently announced this in their latest AF manual...

I don't believe they ever said that for the Mark II. Not that it doesn't help anyway and is good practice, but I think it's something they came up with to help with the Mark III's problems.

Don't know. But I shipped a flash for repairs and it was back home fixed an all before any mention of it going for service appeared on my track job website.

In the follow-up survey, I added this in the other comments box.

Well after another two calls to Canon UK - I have been basically told that the only way I can have mine done is have them picked up and be without the bodies for a total of 5 days or 7 days if it runs over a weekend.

They basically said it didn't matter if I needed them for paying jobs and that I wasn't allowed to arrange a day at their convenience - and deliver / collect the same day.

I got agreement from them that basically being a CPS member and working pro counted for nothing in this case.

So mine are booked for collection Friday - I miss a paying job Monday - and they don't want to know.

Not really what I was expecting - oh well I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
