fyi i switched back to 1.2.3... same observation in terms of servo vs oneshot.

i was either oblivious to this weird issue, and it always existed, OR the new "AF adjustments" caused af to be less sensitive in aiservo

as far as one-shot, this thing is incredible.

edit: i take this back... my misunderstanding of AF modes. https://photography-on-the.net …?p=7749108&postcount=1433

My 1D2 was about unusable in low light / AiServo with a couple of my lenses (all but the 80-200L in fact).
It has been "fixed" by Canon 3 times or so, and still didn't perform good enough. One Shot was fine. I had a loaner 1D2 at the time that *did* perform well with the same lenses / same circumstances.

My 1D3 (yellow dot, not yet sent in, 1.2.5) performs better then either 1D2 from the short time I've used it. Spot on at AiServo; 1/125s; f/2.8; ISO 3200.

I received a really interesting email reply from Mr West fall about my problem. i think this is somewhat of a satisfactory answer for me. i really should just go out and shoot some shows this weekend rather than sit here perplexed.

Is this common knowledge for you guys about Servo mode and I'm just a bit slow on the ball or does this shed some light?

The light level you describe (ISO 800, 1/15 at f/1.2) is close to the threshold of the EOS-1D Mark III's low-light AF sensitivity. Without the use of flash under these lighting conditions, it would be very difficult to obtain sharp photos at f/1.2 unless the camera was steadied through use of a tripod, and also the camera's reflex mirror should be locked prior to exposure.

Assuming that you're prepared to take those considerations into account, then your observation about the difference in focusing capability between One-Shot AF and AI Servo AF for the EOS-1D Mark III is correct. Focus will lock on a subject with readable contrast in One-Shot AF, but AF will fail under the same lighting conditions in AI Servo AF. That is completely normal and to be expected. It's due to differences in the amount of time that light is allowed to accumulate on each pixel in the AF sensor: That period of time, which Canon does not disclose, is longer for One-Shot AF than it is for AI Servo AF, and the result is superior low-light performance for One-Shot AF. This is essentially the performance level that the EOS-1D Mark III offers in extremely low light, so there would be no benefit in sending the camera in for service on this issue.

So I asked this question earlier, but no one responded. Who has had the fix (hardware, adjustment, whatever at the factory) and then gone back to 1.2.3? I am still pretty disappointed with 1.2.5 both before the fix, and after. I have the 123.FIR file. Is there any problems going backward?

thanks,
Phil

Whoa, how did you get a hold of Westfall?!

I know that in January, I shot in a lowly lit bar, with my MK3 and 70-200/2.8 IS, and often shot in servo mode and never noticed any hunting... most shots were about 1/25s to 1/60s at F2.8 and ISO3200.
That is something I will definitely check out when/if my camera arrives back. In low light, nothing could touch my 1D MK3 prior to the fix, it was a beast. I hope it remains that way when/if things get fixed.

This might have been asked before but I can't find it in the thread....

If your camera hasn't already had the 'secondary mirror fix' (announced last year), will Canon UK do this as well if you send it in for the new AF/Err 99 fix?

My camera has a fairly early serial number. As it is working quite well in most lighting situations. I didn't send it in for the earlier secondary mirror fix. Will Canon UK do this as well if I send it to them for the lastest AF/Err 99 fix? Should I write a note and explaind I need the secondary mirror fix too....

I'm still using firmware 1.2.3, for the record. I'm happy to describe my cam as a reference point for people who've gotten the 'fix', especially the Canadians.

Send it to me right away. I run some tests and send the results back to you.....

Have you tried out 1.2.5?

Not yet. My card reader is broken and I'm lazy.

I was told by Canon UK yesterday that when the latest AF fixes have been done a "grey dot" is applied just by the battery terminals inside the battery chamber, as mine has!!

They aren't applying that to all cameras, because mine is dot free!
