I've been perfectly happy with my "old" 10-20 and have no desire to get the new one just for constant F/3.5. I don't think I've ever even shot this lens wide open so I don't see a real benefit. Plus, all of my other lenses (other than my macro) use a 77mm thread so my CPL and ND filters are easily swappable. May be a good lens if you don't already have 77mm filters.

I'll be getting the 10-20mm as soon as it goes on sale. I was actually about to buy the current one today but a friend mentioned they'd announced all these yesterday.

Perryge,

The title of this thread should have said "announces", not "releases". I only nit-pick because last year this time I was researching lenses and Sigma announced several new lenses. But there was never any mention as to when they would be released into the hands of waiting consumers. I tried to email Sigma USA (or whatever the US subsidiary is called), and go a reply that Sigma USA is at the mercy of Sigma Japan for when products are actually shipped, and Sigma Japan is "hush-hush" about the projected ship dates for whatever reason.

I came away from the whole experience a little disappointed. After seeing a press release for new lenses that you might actually want to buy, but then find out it could be months before the product actually hits the shelves. I just wish they would included a projected availability date in their press releases. Why is that so hard for them to do?

Thanks for listening!

I've always been fond of the Sigma 10-20 as an ultra-wide for cropped bodies. All it needed was constant aperture. But an 82mm filter thread? Come on...

I think they were addressing the issue that the old 10-20 vignettes with most filters on Nikon (slightly larger sensor) DX bodies. If you read Thom Hogan's personal review of the lens, it's clear he liked the old 10-20 but whined about it vignetting with his Singh-Ray VND (slim version). Heck, Canon uses 82mm on their 16-35L-II, and the 10-20 is giving an even wider perspective (15mm, 35mm-equiv) on the Nikons when its at the 10mm mark.

much more complex to make a 3.5 lens into a 2.8? i dont think so, maybe a little bigger to let some more light thru, they probably just didnt want to as that is scheduled for a next year, or year after next, they need to milk you for your pennies slowly or they would all be out of jobs long ago

TOkina did f2.8, but there's is also only 11-16mm, the 10-20 is double the range. So imagine it is a bigger feat than it sounds to just go f2.8. I'll take the Sigma 3.5 over the Tokina any day. 10% wider, 40% longer and only about 2/3 a stop penalty? Sounds great to me!

Edit: Oops, bad math. I guess it is 20% longer, not 40%.

Meh.

Honestly, how many shots at this wide of an angle has f2.8 saved for you that 3.5 couldn't have done?

Look feller, speed rules. And the brightest VF possible is the nicest thing.

But by all means, go for the Sigger if it'll make ya happy :D

Just don't get a 40D. They say it does 6.5fps, but some of us have proven otherwise.

New lenses, yes...but will they focus properly without multiple trips to Sigma?

I've had great luck with my 10-20, but I'm in the minority.

Any word on pricing and availability? If anything, this should make the 10-20 F4 cheaper. It's already pretty cheap on Amazon, but I'm cheaper and waiting for it to drop ;)

Either way the 10-20 F4 or 10-20 3.5 *will* be my next lens. I'm pumped. I've really missed this range in the tight national forest valleys I enjoy camping in.

Doesn't the f2.8 of the tokina allow for the better AF on the 40D, while the f3.5 of the new Sigma just miss it?
