In all seriousness, what makes this Domke bag so expensive? It looks like a typical canvas bag. I'm sure there is a reason because people love these bags. I'm just not seeing it.

Extremely well made, highly durable, available accessories, bag should outlive the owner, made in USA (I send enough money to Japan and China).

Tools: Canon 5DmkII, Sony a6400, Fujifilm X100V

The "accessory pouch" is actually a "detachable medical pouch" made for soldiers. There's a matching velcro panel that can be attached to different things and in an emergency (i.e. the soldier gets shot) his buddies can tear off the medical pouch and easily get to the contents and patch him up. I have the velcro panel attached to my backpack and all of the "important but small" stuff inside. When I move between the Domke and my larger backpack I just grab the accessory pouch, the camera and the lens. No worries that I'll be out in the middle of nowhere and realize that the item I need is in the other bag. And the straps that are meant to keeps the bandages and such in place keep everything organized.

Old post, but is the medical accessory pouch pictured available to us in the civilian market?

While a Domke customer for years (countless straps; domke vest) I hadn't owned a Domke bag.

Just fixed that.

Summary:
* It feels like there's nothing there.
* It's right there when I need it.

I carry a dslr and grip, 2 zoom lenses, a flash and a 50/1.4

ps I'm a bagaholic; I need to find a way to recover money from the bags I bought that didn't work for me.

The one thing that has stuck out to me with Domke versus other bags is how so much can go in something that appears so small. Not only that, carrying a Domke is more comfortable because of the strap and how the canvas part of the bag seems to mold to your hip. Before the 4-AF and 7-AF, I had a Canon DG200, Kata Backback, Crumpler 6 Million Dollar Home, Tamrac Computrekker, and a couple of smaller LowePros that hold 1 body and another lens.

Oddly enough, I normally like bags with lots of "bells and whistles" like hidden pockets, smaller pockets on the outside, ipod pouch, water bottle pouch, etc. Most of my travel luggage is Tumi - if that tells you about the type of bags I like. Now, with all of that said, if I need a shoulder bag for my photo gear, I would go with Domke 99% of the time. As far as the previously mentioned bags that I have owned within the last year or two, the Crumpler looked the best, the Kata had coolest pockets and hidden compartments, and the Canon was very inexpensive compared to the others. Why do I stick with the Domkes then? The two Domkes I have are the easiest to shoot out of (either from the front seat of a car, or on my shoulder). They hold more equipment as a same size exterior comparable bag. They are very comfortable to carry even for long periods of time. Now, they aren't the most technical or cool looking, but I like the fact that no one knows I have a few thousand dollars on my shoulder.

I hope this helps.

Dave

Either on my hip or in the side pockets. Perfect fit!

I've had a Domke bag that I've been carrying back and forth to work since 1989. It cost me $90. You do the math.
