question: does it make more sense to buy kenko extension tubes? or reverse-mount a 50mm f1.8? Also, what maximum magnification can i achieve with each?

on to pictures:

I am no professional but I would go with the tubes since you already have the 100mm macro.
That's what I am using these days with my 100mm macro.

tubes are the best way, you should get around the 2x life size with tubes. A reverse-mount a 50mm f1.8 would get you more around the 3 times life size, but have been told reverse mount is much harder to use altho ive never tried it, good shots btw, love the cat and the first shot!

I've taken shots with all 3 at once. Macro lens, Kenko Tubes, and RM 50mm. Difficult to manage that combo. I'd get the tubes; no effect on image quality.

also, what off shoe camera cord would one suggest?

i heard the canon oc-e3 was plastic and tends to break, yet 3rd party ones are rather unreliable?

i'm not sure which route to take...

Lovely series :)
TC= Tele-converter normally come in 1.4X and 2X varieties.

Think canon have modded their off camera cord but don't know if it is any better. I use a generic one and it's fine. If you arrange for the flash fitting to be a 1/4" male screw- it goes up though the bottom of the fitting and you don't have the problem of the plastic clamp flanges breaking off.
