I used LR 1x with no problems on an older system with 3 gigs of Ram. When I loaded version 2 and clicked on the Develop Module I got an hour glass and the program froze. The only way out was to boot the system.

After reading about the memory problems in 2 I quit using it. Then with the memory fix in 2.3 I anticipated it correcting my problem.

Loaded 2.3 and still have the some problem. I can review images fine in the Library module but that is all that is functional.m One click on Develop and it's all done.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

At home I have an 'old' Compaq with Athlon 64 processor (not dual core) with about 1.5 GB of RAM in it, and it runs Lightroom 2.0 just fine! Don't seem excessively slow to me, and I have experience in using the same machine with pretty quick programs like Rawshooter Pro (which was bought by Adobe who used it to create Lightroom)!

Pinto, it sounds like there's something else going on.

There are some troubleshooting steps you could try:

1. Delete the Preferences file.

Close Lightroom.
Find the Preferences file.
Windows XP - Documents and Settings/[Username]/Application Data/Adobe/Lightroom/Preferences/Lightroom 2 Preferences.agprefs
Windows Vista - Users/[Username]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Lightroom/Preferences/Lightroom 2 Preferences.agprefs
Mac OS X - [Username]/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.Lightroom2.plist
These may be hidden folders on some systems, which you may need to show (or type the folder path into the address bar).
You can move or rename that preferences file, rather than deleting, if you think you may wish to put it back.

2. Optimize the Catalog (File menu > Catalog Settings > Relaunch & Optimize and wait for it to tell you it's completed.

3. Create a new catalog to rule out catalog corruption. (Restart Lightroom holding down Ctrl (Windows) or Opt (Mac) and select Create New Catalog.)

4. Import some images into that new catalog to check everything's working as expected.

5. Temporarily remove Develop presets - a corrupted preset can cause problems like that.

And if that doesn't do the trick, report back!!

Oh, and Wilt - Lightroom was already mostly built by the time they bought RawShooter Pro.... but they did use some of the ideas in extending it.

Thanks for straightening out the urban legend! BTW, I do wish that Rawshooter Pro were still around and could read more contemporary RAW files (40D, 50D, 5DII) because I do not always need DAM. I rarely get out of the Develop mode, and use Library only for Import and Export, and the other modes are nothing but code bloat for my purposes! Ihave nothing against LR, just that the power exceeds my needs.

I am the same way Wilt. I think it would be great if Adobe made LR customizable. I have NEVER run the Slideshow or Web module so why should it be there (not that it takes up anything, but it would be nice)?

Thank you for the quick response Victoria. I had an idea just as I was posting and traced it back to one of the usual suspects, the video driver. Hardware acceleration apparently was the key. I disabled it and was in business. I think I updated just prior to LR 2.0. Embarrassed I didn't think of if before posting. Everything works fine now Thanks.

Great to hear Pinto!

Mike, technically you can remove certain modules, although the risks are undocumented.

Interesting. I wouldn't want to do anything to possibly cause problems with LR, but it might be something for the folks at Adobe to consider. <hint, hint>;)

I would expect, if we see more modules in the future, they will probably then become user-selectable. For the moment, I hope the concentrate on doing clearing a few more bugs and tidying up existing functionality a bit further. Marketing guys have a habit of getting in the way of those plans though!!! :D

On my new PC it seems to run really well! I wish I had upgraded a long time ago (computer). Still a few things I would like to see added to LR though, like presets for importing (similar to exporting), and the print module still needs work. But yeah, let the programmers and engineers run free. Lose those marketing guys!
