I have the regular hood for the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8, which is the Canon EW-83J.

I thought it would be nice to have some more efficient shading when using the lens for portraits in the 45-55mm range, where the original hood is unnecessarily wide.

Does anyone know if there is a hood, designed for a longer lens, that will fit this zoom and shade it more efficiently at said focal range?

Yup! You could try the 24-70mm's hood! It will fit!
