This is the list I got off of Dpreview of the variations:

  • 70-200mm F2.8 EX APO - Original version, minimum focus distance 1.8m (1999)
  • 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG - Adds 'digitally optimized' lens coatings to reduce flare (2005)
  • 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro (HSM) - Minimum focus distance reduced to 1m (2006)
  • 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II - Improved optical performance (2007)

I was just wondering which version was best? I have heard that the original macro version was not as sharp as the non-macro that came before it. I have also heard that there was not really any difference between the original non-DG version and the 2005 model. I have seen shots from the newest version and it seems like a good lens, but if one of the older models is optically equal I figured I would purchase that and save a little money. Thoughts?

Supposedly the 2nd version. I had the third version on that list and loved it.

Thanks a lot Mike. I have seen a lot of good shots taken with this lens. I'd like to pick up an older copy, but it might be challenging.

70-200mm F2.8 EX DG - Adds 'digitally optimized' lens coatings to reduce flare (2005)

Was and IS my choice, it's a great lens.

Can't speak on all of them. I only have the EX DG (2005) version and it seems to be very good. Almost as sharp as my 70-200 f/4 IS if steps down to f/4.

I've owned the first three, and the Canon 70-200f/2.8L, and the second-gen Sigma is the sharpest, and the one I use to this day. (the EX DG HSM)

I've owned the 1st and last on the list and found that the original non macro version was much better at 200mm wide open then the latest version. There is one thing though, is that I had both of these in Pentax mount, not Canon but I assume the results would be at least similar.

The other problem I had with the latest model was that it focused inconsistently at close focusing distances. I thought I had a bad copy or needed to dial in some AF adjustment but then I read the dpreview review of the lens and they had the same problem and had a technical reason why it happened.

Not sure if that helps, hope it does.

It's looking like the 2nd gen. is possibly the best. Considering the fact that it is cheaper, I may go this route over the newer Macro II version.
