Using my 50D with a 70-200 2.5 IS . Lighting wasn't ideal. I had to shoot slightly into a 4pm setting sun.

Shot at 1/1600, f 2.8 ISO 200 70-200mm @ 73mm

How can I make this better.

Other than moving the sun to the other side:D? Maybe a little tighter crop.

I would not say this is a great action capture as it would be nice to better see the faces especially of the diving player. Also, instead of doing a vignetting , just crop the sides of the image.

It is also difficult to tell what is happening. I think this is a first baseman diving to catch an errant pick off from pitcher while runner is diving back? But given the lack of a foul line, it also could be the second baseman doing the same thing at second. A good photo should let the viewer know what is happening and at what location.

A better position for a shot like this might be from even with or slightly behind first where you can focus on runner diving back, or else from across diamond so you can get first baseman's face and his front.

Christian,

Thanks for the pointers. FYI no foul line because it was a practice. I completely agree with the better position.

Thank Again

Crop tighter is all you can do at this point. Try shooting from a lower angle (squat down) on these diving shots in order to get the player's face.

You don't "need" to be at F2.8 if your background is not busy. If your at 1/1600 shutter
you can move to f4 and 1/800th.

Your focus point seems to have been somewhere beyond the bag closer to the outfield.
Pre-focus on the bag and then turn AF off.

Try to get some more faces.

The crop is fine IMO.
A little tighter wouldn't hurt.

Dont be afraid to bump your ISO to 400 or 500 to get a larger aperture. When I shoot daytime sports I try to keep my aperture around f5.6.

Faces are always a key thing to get.

Also, like mentioned before, I have no Idea whats going on here. Your audience should be able to look at a photo and tell whats going on.

Overall the photos not bad.
