Is there a head that just tilts up and down? It seems like I wouldn't need a ball head for a monopod as you just turn it right or left or am I missing something?

Thanks

+1
I have this head for my monopod and like it. I didn't feel the need to buy a ballhead for the monopod, but tilting up and down comes in handy at times. I also like having the quick release so that I can take a camera/lens off the monopod with ease.

Not a problem. It will take a while to get monopod technique down if you are used to shooting handheld, but it makes a great IS system for the budget conscious photographer. :)

Sort of a related, and definitely newbie, question: Would one attach this head directly to the lens mount (70-200L) or use a plate (like a Wimberly) between the two?

That's a matter of individual preference. I use quick release plates on all my gear. If you never change what you're using once you set out, you don't need to use a quick release plate. If you change gear a lot, you want one. The product that's linked to above has a Manfrotto RC2 quick release plate; there are versions which don't.

I use the Manfrotto 681B w/3229 Tilt Head, but not for tilting the head up and down.

I position the camera/lens direction so tilting all the way to one side or the other is a quick change from landscape to portrait orientation, basically for the lenses I have that don't have a lens ring.

I use the Manfrotto 379B monopod with the 234RC (3229) tilt top. (The RRS kit is a bit expensive.)

My 100-400 is oriented on the plate so it tilts up and down. When I want to switch from landscape to portrait I rotate the camera and lens in the collar. The plate on the bottom of the camera is oriented the other way so I can flip the camera itself from landscape to portrait when shooting with a smaller lens.

Did the price on the 055XPROB and 488RC2 just go up this week?

Does this have the same quick release plate as the 488RC2 ball head? I was thinking about buying this head for a monopod but I would love to have the same QR plate as my tripod.
