Is this green line around the edges normal? Just picked up this new lens yesterday. Shot several frames of this bird in strong back light, so I had to over expose a bit. On this, one image I see this green stuff. Still testing the lens, so it may go back.

300mm - f/4 - ISO400 - 1/500 - +2 exp - shot in fine jpg

I'm sure some of the more technically minded folk will explain it better than me, but I think that is longitudinal chromatic aberration. I get green behind and purple in front fringing the blown out OOF areas with my 300 f/4 too.

That's chromatic aberration, which happens with high-contrast edges, especially in the conditions you described. It's normal and can be removed relatively easily.

Yes, and thanks, That's what I figured, as I only saw this issue on one shot (this one) I didn't worry too much about it.
Hopping for some nice weather tomorrow, so I can test it on flying ducks. I knew about CA, but never saw the green stuff before, so I know now. Thanks again

It just isn't ripe yet. Wait a couple of days and it'll turn purple. ;)
