Since I refuse to give up my 24-105 f4, this is causing me a problem.

1) I need something wider for indoor shots of kids and family.
2) I need something faster than f4 for the newborn kid.

Id like to get the Tokina 11-16 2.8 but am advised its not really good for close ups.

I had a nifty fifty and miss it, but purchasing it again only helps my fast lens issue.

Im looking to spend $600 or less and want to know what you all think suits me best.
Possibly the Sigma 20 1.8?
Maybe the Tokina 11-16 AND the Nifty Fifty?
Tamron 17-50?

Im open to any combination so Id like to hear your thoughts.
Thanks!

I know you want to keep you're 24-105 but have you thought about maybe replacing it with the 24-70 f2.8 instead? (just a thought but I guess you would still have to find something to fix ur width issue)

Faster than f4 for the newborn kid is not something I would say you need. You have IS and for the first while they don't move that fast, trust me - I have a 4 year old.

In terms of wide, I found my Sigma 24-70 wide enough most the time. But I do understand the desire to go wider. The Tamron 17-50 is a good choice, as is the Sigma 18-50 EX. Actually Sigma has just come up with a new 18-50 EX DC with HSM that should be a winner.

You can probably pick up a Tamron 17-50 and a speedlight for $600 or under. A flash will really help you out.

EDIT

After reading your gear list, you've already got one. For a newborn, I think you can get away with what you have. If you want something wider for events, check out the Tamron.

I should clear up a little bit.

I wanted a fast lens (2.8 or faster) for the shallow depth of field. I sold the Sigma 17-70 and at 17mm it provided great DOF for some creative shots.

The wide angle I need because this 24mm has me backing into corners in every room here and Im still not wide enough.

best choice is 17-55 but even used it's 750-850

10-22 canon isn't f2.8 but rectilinear and great ultrawide on 40d

i have bunch of sigmas so i'd vote for the sigma or 10-22 and bump the iso up

wants for Ls :D , now have 400do;500f4is,600f4 :cool: off to birding and airshows:):):)

The Tamron is great, but covers ground you already have. The Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 and the nifty fifty. would be a great combo. Others to consider buying along with the nifty fifty would be the Tokina 12-24mm or the Canon 10-22mm.

Let me suggest something unusual.

You need a 5D.... a full frame.

You're right in not giving up the 24-105, it is a superb lens. I have used it indoors at events, in near pitch darkness, and f/4 is enough. I do use a flash at events. If you rack up the ISO it is enough, and the 5D is very clean.

Plus it solves your wide. Personally I wouldn't put a 24-105 on a 40D.. but that's just me. It never reaches its true wide potential. (I have a 40D as well, and the 24-105 lives permanently on the 5D.).

Sell the 40D and get a gently used 5D in the Buy/Sell forum. You can pick them up nowadays for about $1100, give or take...then your "wide" problem is solved (and also the DOF issue). Take the $600 that you're willing to spend on another lens and get something faster if need be.

OOHH Trust me this thought HAS crossed my mind. The more I look, the more Im leaning twords the Siggy 20 1.8 but the Tamron is hard to pass up as well.

it would be cool if you could have the Tokina 11-16 & Tamron 17-50 along with your Sigma 70-200...you'll have a 3rd party 2.8 zoom trinity. that trio would be awesome for low-light conditions.

I second the idea of getting a 5D body for a song somewhere! The full frame perspective will absolutely change your vision and passion for photography like nothing else.
