We have some friendly magpies in our front yard that I occasionally feed (along with the rest of the bird population around us).

Here is "Precious". She's the dominant female, and is mate to "Sam" (who I'll post up later). She's carolling here, making sure everyone knows where she is and that it is her territory.

Our house is right in the middle of a boundary between two pairs so "Darling", "Sam", "Sweetie" (daughter) and "Beakless" (Precious's sister) are in our front yard, and "Mama", "Papa" and current "babba" are in the back yard. I have more interaction with Sam and co than I do the backyard mob as they have the gully behind us to garner feed from.

Another one of "DArling" (you can just make out the back of Sam in the upper right of the shot and, yes the eye isn't as clear as it could have been)

And two of a Noisy Minor. This breed disappeared from around our home for the past couple of years but they've learnt that I'll occasionally throw out some old bread. There were 15 of them in and around the front yard the morning I took these.

Nice set of shots. I'm afraid if I had Magpies where I now live, they would be having breakfast with me at the kitchen table. I get too attached to my bird friends. I forget they are birds, and sometimes, they think they are people. :)

Vicious looking beaks on the magpies. Are these the ones which sometimes attack humans?

Nice series - thanks for sharing.

Thanks everyone.

Scrumpy, Magpies will swoop when people get within a certain range of their nest. It's a defensive gesture although it does seem like your under attack :)

They are actually song birds but there is some evidence in their features that suggest they may have been birds of prey at some stage in their evolutionary tract. Yes, I have more than a passing interest in this wonderful birds :D

Here's a couple of Sam. I blew out the white on his neck and back but you get a better view of a Magpie's beak.
