I have a very good quality B&W 82mm uv filter that I don't use very often. I was thinking about getting a step up ring 77-82 to use on my 100-400L and or 70-200 2.8L is. If I do will I have any problems with the lens hoods fitting? Please don't tell me not to use a filter at all because I will only use it in extreme conditions. I normally don't use a filter. And I do know that the 100-400 L doesn't like uv filters very much(so I 've heard).

Does the 82mm filter fit with room to spare inside the hood as it stands?

The filter fits in the hood no problem at its widest part ,but it looks like I wouldn't be able to get the hood on after the filter is on. I guess I could put the hood on first then the filter but that might be tricky trying to get my fingers in to screw it on.

Sounds like that might be a deal-breaker...
