Taken back in December this is a long exposure shot taken about 35 minutes before sunrise. I used a bit of trial an error to find the best exposure time for this shot and ended up at 1m 47 seconds as F/11 ISO 50. I should have tried for a bit longer by closing the aperture further and perhaps using one of my ND filters but I was still pleased to get one star trail and some movement in the clouds and water. I used a tripod, cable release and mirror lockup to prevent any movement from the camera and manual focused on the pier since AF was struggling in the very low light.

The light on the beach is light pollution from the street lamps along the promonade. I boosted the exposure by +0.67 in Lightroom to get the balance correct. That's the beauty of using RAW!

Very, very nice. I'm mixed on that one star trail. With it being just one, I could see it being mistaken for a flaw in the picture, if you were to print it. No biggie at all. Just my .02, but just a gorgeous shot. Nicely done.

Very nice; interesting that no filters were even needed to get this great shot.

Wow, love it.

If was me though, I would have pointed the camera slightly lower, to balance the composition.

OUTSTANDING. That should be a very large print in your living room.

Nice man! I love long exposure shots, I use to be obsessed ;) For some reason I had the idea that everything looked better 20 second and up lol

Pick up a Hoya ND400 and you'll never look back (it's 30 second exposures during the day haha)

Great shot, and thanks for giving the details on how the shot was taken! I'm still playing around with tripod and cable release myself, so it's always nice to see examples of what they're capable with.

I've actually been looking at these or maybe a B&W ND1000 for exactly this purpose.

Cheers,
Steve
