I've been looking for and "Old Fashioned" type camera cover for my 40D since I got it. What I'm looking for is of the old fshioned leather type cover that screws into the tripod mount socket and has a cover that snaps onto itself on the bottom, then wraps from bottom -> top of camera around the lens and snaps onto itself again..

Does anyone here even know what I'm talking about, or where to get something similar that will fit a 40D.

I think I've seen these modernized a bit, they look to be made of stretchy foam, mount around the lens and wrap around and snug against the camera to stay in place, do these have a name?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Duane

Hi Duane - I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. Try Keh.com as they sell a lot of used stuff, as well as Mpex.com in Columbus Ohio. Good luck with the search. - Stu

I don't know if you'll find anything in leather, but I know what you are talking about. I have many old cameras that have the leather covers that screw into the tripod socket.

EOSNewbie,
Yea, I remember way back when my Pentax ESII had a leather cover that screwed into the tripod socket. :) I haven't seen one for a DSLR yet.... but it would be interesting to see one for my 40D ;)

Good Luck with finding one :)

@C4Miles,

You Nailed it. I think that this is as close as I'm going to get to what I'm looking for. It has good reviews at adorama.com so I think I'm going to get a few and see how I like them.

I think that lack of quick lightweight protection is the main reason I don't bring my camera around with me much. I work doing road construction, and I'm constantly in and out of trucks which have equipment stored and accessed from the cab. I've been tempted to bring along the camera, in the bag of course, but space is limited, and couldn't justify the risk of damage without the bag.

I'll give a review after testing the product out.

@ All thanks for your suggestions.

D.

You're describing the old eveready cases... most pro's hated them because when you had to get a shot, you had to unhook it, fold it down, and then it was in the way while you shot. For the occasional photographer who never needed anything besides the compact zoom or 50mm, it was nice.

I don't think they produce them besides the already linked items. Good luck

Dan

The "neveready" case. I think we all probably bought one with our first SLR, years ago.

I know what you are talking about. I used one on my Nikon F for a couple oif years when I first acquired it.

Have not seen any of those cases floating about at all.

I remember them...never used one just because of the opening/folding thing. If you find one that works, my guess is that you'll be limited to only your 50mm lens.

EOSNewbie,
Have you seen the Compact Zoom bags? ??? They are small and yet give you some options like a spare battery and having a small zoom on camera. Here is a link to Cambags.com (external link) on the Compact Zoom bag I have that gives great protection with a small size.

I hated the old leather cases. It would always get in the way. I would remove the top section and lay it down somewhere because it was inconvenient to carry. Then, I would have to search for the top when I put things away. Don't forget the thin camera straps that went with the case. They always slipped off your shoulder.

I much prefer what we have now.
