today I took Kona for a walk...it was a nice path along the river and people are supposed to keep their dogs on a leash. I came around a corner and was suddenly accosted by two dogs. One doberman and one (at least half ridgeback). The pinned Kona btw. my legs...the doberman was in front of me barking and the ridgeback was behind me growling (ridge up). Their "owner" was further down the trail talking to a bicyclist. Completely ignoring her dogs menacing us. Finally I yelled "HEY are these your dogs. You need to contain them.." and she whistled...the doberman returned to her and SHE CONTINUED HER CONVERSATION completely ignoring the ridgeback.

I was so mad. I forgot to be afraid. I was so angry I didn't say anything because I know I would have completely lost my temper. Finally I made myself as big as possible and moved toward the ridgeback saying "get away" and it retreated to her.

I've decided to carry mace in future though. I had no idea what those dogs would do to me or Kona. And the owners behavior was absolutely unacceptable.

She knew I was upset as I continued my walk past her (she was still talking to the cyclist). She just looked at me very rude like "yeah, my dogs could do the very thing you expected". It was the rudest animal/owner encounter I've ever had...

I did learn though that I can be pushed past fear to absolute fury.

sigh. thanks for listening.

And without that encounter you may not have learned that about yourself for a very long time. In all things, a reason ;)

Well done, my friend, well done.

That is completely unacceptable Lisa. I would have said something to the lady or at the very least, reported her to code compliance for not complying to the leash laws. Good thing though is that you and Kona are okay and were not hurt in any way.

I am assuming that RoF can only be enabled in a 5D right?

The 1 series cameras have it as well.

Jon part of why I wanted a 5D was so I was FF in both cameras so I could have continuous lens range. It drove me crazy with a crop body and full frame.

Lisa this a familiar story to me .Often when Andy walks Mini on a path behind our house that extends from one little village to the next Your suppose to walk your dogs with a leash .Well about a hundred times I've heard Andy tell me how rude people are about the dogs they walk having them off leash and not even watching them .He's had to carry Mini in his arms because of dogs before Big dogs coming right for her ,boy ...ya dont mess with his money his dog or me..hahah in that order too .

I went to the Arthur B. Ripley Desert Woodland state park (external link), near where I live, today. Interesting place! It's a nice sized state park, but the "public" area is very small. The loop trail is maybe a quarter of a mile at most. There is one picnic table and one porta-potty at the trailhead. There are signs saying to "stay on the trails", which I assume means that tiny "official" loop trail, but there was so much more to the park I went off trail for a while. I was following some faint use trails, so if someone called me on it, I was going to use that as my excuse. Hey, it's a trail! lol Anyway, I had the entire place to myself. There wasn't another person within miles.

There were almost no wildflowers at all in the park. I saw maybe four or five total, and none of them were poppies. There were plenty of Joshua Trees (not even those were blossoming yet) and juniper around, though. Plus other desert plants like sage, beavertail cactus, rabbitbrush, needle grass, etc. The only wildlife I saw were some small birds flitting about.

On the way there I also drove by the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve SNR (State Natural Reserve) (external link) and it didn't look like the poppies were anywhere close to being at their peak there yet, either. There were some poppies by the road, but the hillsides around that area were only showing the yellow from those same tiny flowers that are in the field across the street from where I live. It was a little chilly and very windy, so most of the poppies that were in bloom already were not opening yet. I'll wait a couple weeks and go back and see if things are looking any better before I decide to pony up the $7 daily entrance/parking fee for the reserve...

A few pictures:

One of the rare few poppies that was trying to open up in the gusty, chilly wind (from the 24-70 -- I didn't even bother taking the 100mm macro out of the bag):

Ok so far. I did a little exploring, but the flora wasn't as spectacular was I was hoping for. Maybe it'll be better in a couple weeks.
