Where are all the 35/1.4s? "backordered" or "out of stock"

I have been looking for a good, used copy of this lens, but they are nowhere to be had. New ones have been backordered everywhere, which leaves the competition for older ones pretty stout. They're the only L lens not readily available by canon. Inquiring minds want to know.

Where have all the 35Ls gone? Does anyone know if this has anything to do with a new mkII version or something silly like this?

I've been waiting to buy the 50mm 1.4 and it has been out of stock and backordered at B&H for weeks and weeks now. I've noticed the 35L out of stock for awhile when I was looking as well as some others. You're not alone!

There are a lot of lenses that are out of stock these days. I'm guessing it's because retailers are lowering their inventory to avoid taxes in this current economic climate.

Also notice refurb prices are going up lately, not as much 'off' retail as once seen.

Wow I just checked on my 400mm f/5.6 that I'm going to order on Wednesday and it just went out of stock today... Timing is everything in life I guess. Anyone know where I can find one for a comparable price to the $1140?

A mk 2 is certainly coming. The companion 24L mk I was released around the same time and it was just redesigned with new coatings, a new switch, new sealing, etc. It only makes sense that the 35L will get the same treatment (and 80%+ price increase) soon.

Buy now if you need it now or you don't want to pay the increased price. The Mk I is a good lens regardless of a new version.

It was out of stock for a long long while back in 2005ish IIRC. In terms of replacements, my 85L was manufactured Nov. 2005, just months before the mark 2 was announced... so I seriously doubt the 35L is done being produced just yet - even if the 35LII gets a fall 2009 annoucement.

I don't really know what they'd update with the 35L, aside from adding a weather seal. Maybe a reduction of longitudinal CA at wide apertures, but other than that, there's nothing to improve!

I wonder if it has to do with the time of year? I tend to shoot more in the warmer months than in the colder ones, i imagine that holds true for a lot of people, hence "supply and demand".
