Ok something odd came up yesterday. I pulled out my 40D to go on a shoot and after taking one or two shots I noticed a light circle in my viewfinder. I took off my lenes and looked at everything and noticed it was on my focusing screen?

Anyone ever get this and how did it get there?

Thanks for any help. I searched the site but could not find anything.

The mirror is clean. when you turn the camera upside down and look up at the focus screen I can see it. I guess I should take out the focus screen? never did that.

No it runs close to the edge of the viewfinder. its not in the center. when you look through the viewfinder it runs close to the outside edge and is one quarter inch think, like a band. Now thats looking throught the viewfinder. When you look at the screen it is visable to my eye.

Ignore doctorgonzo, he doesn't know the difference between spot and center weighted ;) The one in the center is a 9% circle (last i checked at least, 20d/30d), and is very fine, not that easy to see, but a perfect circle. If it's slightly ovular, chances are that it is actually just the fresnel pattern showing up. Both are perfectly normal.

The 40D focusing screen has a circular fresnel pattern molded into the surface. That is what you are seeing.

I wonder if its the same as my problem

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk …s/showthread.php?t=117811 (external link)

Almost looks like the ring a mug of water would leave on a table, very light grey but very obvious to the eye, its definately a circle and I think its on the focusing screen, its been there since I bought the camera and I've asked them to order in a new one. Its not supposed to be there, I've looked through a number of 40ds and none of them have it the screen is totally clear on those as it was on the 300d.

Thats it! but mine just appeared? Thats the starnge part. Its not like I never noticed it before I'm a little observant. I contacted Canon and they are fixing it.

What did they say Grizzly? I'd be interested to know what caused it, mine was like it out of the box I can't see anything which would cause it, nothing that shape which might impact with it its a complete mystery and looks on mine like too was casued in the manufacturing process, how very strange. Glad you are getting it fixed though, because mine arrived with it I've managed to persuade the retailer to replace the unit just waiting for them to get stock in :)

Honestly if you could see it I think you'd realise its not right

This is the terrible sketch I did

IMAGE: http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/1596/captureo.jpg

The grey ring is the only area the mark appears in and although its perfectly circular it varies slightly in its opacity almost in concentric rings or a smear caused a circular polishing process. As its a brand new unit and as the retailer has agreed to replace it I'm not going to remove the focusing screen (I don't have the tool anyway) but if I look up into the camera with the lens off the mark is visible in what I assume to be the focusing screen (the next stage after the mirror?)
