Snowing fools auto focus? (5D mk ii)

Today I've just taken more out of focus shots of static objects with 5D mk ii than I've taken in 1.5 years with 40D. Thankfully most of the shots were ok.

It was snowing so I'm thinking that occasionally the camera focused on the falling snow and not my subject. Is this a commonly known problem? Quick googling and searching in this forum hints that I may have made the right conclusion but I didn't find anything totally convincing.

If this is the reason, any tricks how to improve auto focus performance when it is snowing?

In non-snowing conditions the camera hasn't had any auto focus problems. It's not the lens as this happened with 24-105 and 70-200 2.8 IS. I used center focus point as unfortunately the others are often quite useless. My 40D hasn't seen much falling snow so I can't compare to it.

I got out of focus on some very easy situations that I have never missed before. I checked shutter speeds/apertures/etc. and they are ok. E.g. a photo that contains only small balconies on a building wall (e.g. can focus only to balcony, wall or snow) using settings like f/8 + 1/100s + 95mm was totally out of focus. The next photo of the same subject is sharp with exactly same settings except double focal length.

I'll post examples later if there is reason to believe that it might be something else than the snow.

Do you totally shoot auto? Manually focusing will get you the desired effect.

you're a great friend, but if Zombies chase us, I am tripping you.

So far I've used manual focus only when I'm using a tripod. It seems that it might be required also when it is snowing and the photo must be ok (and there is the time to do the manual focus).

I haven't experienced this problem, but I would suggest that you try turning off the AF expansion (assist points) and see how you do.

My understanding is that the assist points have an effect only in AI SERVO but I was shooting static objects with ONE SHOT.

So anyone can confirm/deny that snowing has considerable effect to auto focus performance? I'm not talking about a blizzard but normal snowing.

As for snow, I'm sure that it will depend on the amount of snow falling, how much light is hitting the snow, how much contrast is on your target, etc. I have shot in snow with the 5DII and haven't noticed any issues, but the conditions may have been much different that where you were shooting.

That certainly looks strange. I haven't enabled the assist points on so they can't cause my out of focus shots.

Just to clarify: snow on the ground (or buidling, statue, ...) is not a problem. Snow seems to be a problem when it's coming down from the sky.

I'd like to hear more experiences about auto focus performance during snowing. Is it just as reliable as normally or do you get more out of focus shots than you normally would? Your DSLR doesn't have to be 5D mk ii.

So far there is only one person who has said that snowing hasn't affected auto-focus and nobody else than me has assumed/said that snowing has fooled their auto-focus.

I have published 1) an example out of focus shot, 2) 100% crop of it and 3) 100% crop of a sharp photo of the same subject:
