Haven't been on here for awhile...I have a 50 mm 1:1.4 lens that decided to not focus anymore. All other lenses auto focus just fine. It's as though the AF/MF switch doesn't work. Any ideas about self-fixing it, or is it worth it to send it back to canon. Any suggestions welcome.

It's a rather common problem with that lens. Your best bet is probably to send it off to Canon....although I seem to remember of hearing about someone doing a "self repair" from somewhere....but that doesn't help you :)

Sorry to hear about your lens not focusing. The 50mm 1.4 does seem to have more than it's share of AF problems.

If you take a moment to do this poll and post your problem, it may help out others
who have this lens: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=633048

try mounting it later on...mine temporarily didnt focus and then it started working again in 15min or so. I always wondered if it was affected by the cold weather as that was the only thing that changed.

Just for my own data, how do you store the lens? Hood attached? With other lenses? On it's side, facing up, or facing down?

Ive stored mine with hood attached 100% of time (just pinch off lens cap) and face down in my camera bag.

Thanks for the help all. Something else I discovered ...

manually focusing it (still in AF mode) there is very little resistance, but with the focus button (*) down there's more resistance and some jerky sensation. The motor is trying to do something, so it's definitely not the AF/MF switch. Occasionally it willtry to move about 1mm on it's own (while AF).

My guess is it has something stuck in the micro gears, and I'm not going to get it out on my own. Sounds like a trip to the repair store. :(

There are many gears in this lens. There is a clutch system which allows Full Time Manual focus even though it only has Micro USM.

Lens was about 18 months old. Used quite a bit the first 8 months then only a hand full of times. Stored face up, no hood.
