Has anyone out there tried the 3rd part tripod mount rings out there such as this one: here (external link)
Looking for something for a 70-200 f4 IS but the canon ones are about $120 and these ones are only $20.

Any reports?

I did, that exact same one. It is VERY good, but it has only one disadvantage. The lens can move even with the screw at the limit. Though, it is very little movement and can be avoided by putting an ordinary piece of paper between the lens and the ring.

Does it seem durable? What is it made out of? I was looking at the same one and wanted to make sure I didn't drop my body/L lens off the tripod.

It sure does... it is made of metal!

heard they are pretty decent. only thing is u might have to add a piece of felt to the inside of the ring for a more snug fit

Before Christmas I emailed Kirk on another subject and they advised me then that they are planning to introduce a range of Arca Swiss QR plates complete with lens rings for Canon similar to the range they already do for Nikons.

They told me at the time that the range would be offered "from the Spring".

Kirk equipment is excellent quality, but is not cheap, so it will be interesting to see where the prices are pitched. I have never liked the ugly QR plates bolted to an otherwise well designed lens ring, so Kirks idea of designing it as a complete item seems good to me.

I had one and the movement drove me nuts. I went with the Canon eventually and wish I had not tried to save money in the first place as it ended up costing more. FWIW

I have a similar one from ebay and it works great. It is sturdy and doesn't let the lens slip. The only problem I have ever had with it is that the black part that grips the lens sometimes leaves a little residue on the lens, but it comes off pretty easily. Overall it was a great buy and an excellent way to save $100.

The Kirk thing sounds interesting but i'm going to bet the price is more than the the canon one and kirk plate combined. Most people seem to charge a premium for convenience. Surprised nobody has done that already though, especially Really Right Stuff.
