I thought that her face was too bright,
has lost the majority of details.
(Is also possibly my monitor's reason .)

Mike,

I'm not sure what you are wanting as far as critique. Recently I critiqued an image here on POTN where the guy said it was a recent shoot and that he wanted C&C, leading me to believe that he was a fledgling professional just starting out, so I spent about 10 minutes giving him a detailed constructive critique on his image in order to help him out. It was a posed studio type shot with off camera lighting. He then posts back that it was just a snapshot and that the subject was his sister-in-law and that it was no big deal. GRRRRRRRRR.

So, I'm just stupid enough to believe that there are image makers here on POTN that are really interested in refining their skills. Hopefully you are one of them.

I like the overall feel of the image and her expression is excellent, but the image is overexposed. It is also broad lit with a very hard light source. Broad hard lights sources are great for football players, body builders and wrestlers, but not very flattering for beautiful young women. She appears to be slumped over a little bit, and the bright back arm is distracting. Five seconds spent smoothing and positioning her hair would have been very well spent.

Keep on shooting and getting critique and you will get better.

Benji

Because someone responds to your critique may or may not mean they aren't open for constructive criticism...

The image isn't overexposed, the black and white conversion may not be appealing to you, but the conversion was an artistic choice... I am attaching the original photo so that you can see the original.

As far as slumping how can you discern that from a headshot (which was a crop from another pictures)? Just curious as I don't see any indication of body position.

I truly appreciate the C&C and have plenty of other shots on my flickr site... I will take a look at the conversion of the B&W as well maybe I made it a bit too much satiny (not that satiny is a word)... :)

Take a look at the other shots, you will find that the hair in this photo was also planned...

Maybe it's just a preference, but I like this style. Portraiture is about intimacy. And when I saw your shot, it was instant and intimate. I like the black and white with the hue better than the color. Maybe warm the hue up a bit so it's not too pinky. The BW conversion gives it more emotion, a dark sultry thing. I get the hair, it's almost sassy - like her expression. The arm on her head makes more sense if you back out a tad so you're not cropping the elbow off. But I get the whole seduction thing she's doing. She looks really young though. It can verge on weird to uncomfortable to project seduction onto a young person. Just saying, she could be 30 for all I know. But I doubt it.

Mike,

(Copy from above) "The image isn't overexposed..." I loaded your original image into Photoshop and took a "R" reading in Info on her right cheek. It registered 255 in several places. The highest reading caucasion skin should have (diffused highlight) is 240.

(Copy) "As far as slumping how can you discern that from a headshot (which was a crop from another picture)? Just curious as I don't see any indication of body position." I can tell when someone is slumping from 25 feet, in your image the "hump" in the upper middle of her back gives it away as does her near shoulder, it is round and slightly forward. If she were sitting up tall neither of these would be as pronounced.

But hey what do I know, huh?

This is getting funny... As I said before that the conversion was intentional and I understand that you believe that it is too bright and I conceded that it would be something to consider when I do a conversion before... a legitimate C&C... as far as curvature of spine yes, there is one, but IMO it is a natural curve and not a slump... here is the orig before crop. And my main job is a nurse so what would I know about slumps? I knew you would take my reply the wrong way, but I guess you are the only one that can have an opinion and responding about one's thought processes while developing a picture is verboten?
