Is there such a thing as a hard drive that you can connect your camera to and transfer pics, without the use of a PC?

Im not sure. But I know there are wireless CF cards that can transfer images straight to your PC while you shoot..

Directly? no. If you have a 40D, 50D, 5D II or 1D3 with the wireless transmitter you can connect a USB drive (hard or flash) to that and save directly to the drive. There are "bridge" devices that let you connect two USB storage devices and transfer files between them. And there are devices like the Epson P5000 which are hard disks with built-in card readers. With those you can remove your card from the camera and copy it up to the Epson's HDD. HyperDrive also makes one, as do a few other companies.

Thanks for the info.

So I just plug my 40d into a regular external harddrive and bob's my uncle? Is that draining on the battery?

And an you tell me where I can find this "bridge" device? A good make/model?

Sorry, I left a couple of important words out of that - you need the wireless transmitter and the drive plugs into that. Yes, it uses camera battery power. The "bridge" devices are very pricey for what you get; what I've tried also required constant attention to transfer large cards. They wouldn't just move 4 GB from device A to device B. And things like the Epson are now being competed with price-wise by netbooks. If you can get a 9" laptop for $300 and check your e-mail and surf the web to boot, why spend $350 for a glorified hard disk with a 5" screen? An Acer Aspire One or Asus Eee 700 or 900 will fit into the outside pocket of one of my Domke bags.

Why don't you just take out the CF card and plug it into a Hyperdrive (www.hyperdrive.com (external link)) or similar device and download the pics directly?

Wolverine Data 7080 Flashpac (external link)

Cost less than $100 after rebate and can also function as an external drive for your computer. Comes in different drive sizes and priced accordingly.

This will do exactly what you want.

You can switch it between a master or slave mode as a master it acts like a PC so you can copy your pictures from the camera. In slave it works like a normal USB external drive.

If you're just looking to offload pictures to a device while on the road, then there's a number of units that will do that. I recently bought a Canon M80 (it was half-price)
see: http://www.canon-europe.com …age_Devices/M80/index.asp (external link)

it uses the Canon BP-511 batteries.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:
