I'm a bit weird in the lenses I like. I'll get that out of the way now... I don't like 2.8 zooms because they're too big, heavy and expensive (the first two because I like a small kit for travel photography). Because of this I have a few fast primes and 3 f4 zooms and that's served me pretty well.

Now that I have a 5Dii and easy access to cleaner high ISOs I've been toying with the idea of getting a 2.8 zoom again (swapping the brick for my 24-105). But I'm not sold on that idea, so I was looking around and found the 20-35mm at KEH and thought that's about perfect for my shooting style inside (I use the 24L almost exclusively inside and have been trying a sigma 20mm lately and liking it). So I picked this up a few weeks ago:

notice the case!!!

IMAGE: http://gear.benjacobsenphoto.com/wp-content/gallery/canon-20-35/img_2455.jpg

the AF/MF switch is annoying in that it switches accidentally easily:

size comparison (co-workers 11-16):
IMAGE: http://gear.benjacobsenphoto.com/wp-content/gallery/canon-20-35/img_2452.jpg

but in use this lens has been amazing. It can focus fast enough to deal with my 1y/o at home in low light with a 5Dii (even with outer points!). Yes the AF is noisy, but it works which is all I care about. The lens is very nice and small which I LOVE. It's also TACK SHARP!!!

it's funny, but I've owned the 16-35II and felt it wasn't worth the price over the stellar 17-40. And now I can own both the 20-35 AND 17-40 for less money... I've been toying with the idea of swapping my 24-105 for another brick, but it's just SUCH a big lens (both to carry, but also it's intimidating to some subjects). The new siggy version is also something I've been considering. The 24L has been my go to lens, but I've been loving this 20-35 since I started using it.

Now if only canon would remake it, add HSM, then make it a 2.0 zoom, I'd be in heaven.

Nice. How much was it, if you don't mind me asking? My Nikon 105 2.5 Ai came in a nice case like that too :D.

There's one on ebay with a buy-it-now of $750. It seems like the focal length is a little narrow for that price.

I bought the 17-35 just as it replaced this on, had it for almost ten years, and when i started using it on the 5d, did not like the sharpness on the edges and bought the 17-40... Im actually contemplating this zoom now as I would prefer this FL, normally never go below 24 but i like to be able to go up to 35 without changing lens...

^ yeah, from what I've seen online, canon's 2.8 wide zooms have gotten worse as they've made them wider with the exception of the 16-35 to 16-35II jump? I'm loving this little guy though. Supposedly there's 2 versions though (a silent revamp) and this is from the second which are "better" (I had not clue until some friends called canon about a used one in CA because it's date code was AFTER the 17-35 by a few years).

As for the FL being limiting, I've been shooting with my 24L almost exclusively for a while now. I LOVE wide lenses so I'm also shooting a 20mm siggy right now. The 20-35 give me both those FLs (and they are different) as well as 28mm and 35mm. Not it's not got a ton of range, but it's actually quite nice for how I shoot indoors type shots. Outside I'll take my 17-40 all day. ;)

I'll be doing a lens test here soon with this, the 17-40, 24L and 20 EX DG. :)

I think it was just under $600 in EX condition? I'd have to go back and check the receipt though as it's been 2 weeks.

The 20-35 was my first L. I still use this lens when I need wide.
Bought new in 1990.

This sample stopped down to f11 shot at 20mm.

I have a beat up 20-35L that I keep meaning to sell. It is a good lens, but it seems I am always thinking superwide(16-35) or normal(24-70) and it never ends up on my camera

Dsjees. That one looks like it's *new*...
Nothing at all like mine

Image with the cell phone, but I think the missing ring (which holds the FL indicator and the red dot is visible (or rather: isn't)
Also a bit of wear on the bayonet. (never mind the arrow pointing to a screw, image was meant for another thread)

Paid € 450 for it a few years back I think. So you got a nice deal IMO.

IMO it's about comparable to the 17-40L when stopped down to f/8 or f/11 (tested it once)

Very nice jacobsen. I picked one up in the UK to replace a poor 17-40, and cover that 35mm length on a 7d. Unfortunately the copy I got was very soft and wasn't much better stopped down.

Now very happy with a Tammy 17-50 ultra sharp -and that will do until I can find a Tokina 16-28 to compare with the Tammy. Winner gets kept!

Is this now a discontinued canon lens? What was its replacement?
