The title says it all. Thanks for looking and any critique would be appreciated.
Thanks to David W. for letting me borrow his lens for these.

1. Agree with aaagogo above

2. 1/800 shutter speed, as I am sure you can tell from your batter shots is too slow for baseball. Boost your ISO (i think you had it at 400?) to keep shutter at 1/1000 or higher to freeze action better.

3. Faces are critical in any sport action shot including baseball...2,3 and 8 lack in this regard.

4. Batter shots are best when they have already hit the ball and are coming out of their stance and starting to watch track of ball and get out of box. Bat on ball shots rarely show batters face (as his head should be down). Snap a frame or two after contact in photo #2 and as long as you are in focus you will get a much better action photo.

5. #8 - LHP are shot best from first base side of mound so their face is open to you. RHP from 3B side of mound as in #4 (only thing that kills an otherwise good shot is the focus)

Lots of good tips in other threads on here for baseball shooting. Keep at it and your shots will improve. Work on the focus issue. Not sure what the problem is - lens appears to be front focusing...ie grass in front of batter and pitcher shots seems to be what is in focus instead of the player

I might take you up on that. I think that the Sigma would fit my needs at this point. I'm sure I'll end up with the Canon IS eventually, but I don't really NEED it.

Thanks for the tips. I stayed in one spot throughout the game, so that is why I used the angles that I did. If I would have been going mobile than I would have tried some different angles.

Yes, I was using AI Servo and I have my focus adjusted to go off of the * button. I can't stand the whole half shutter press thing...

You dont always need 1/100th to freeze action. I find that many times. Epecially like what it was yesterday (rain, overcast, poor lighting) 1/800th would be fine. yes he could have boosted his ISO but these are not that bad for his first time. especially in the conditions he was shooting in.

Purely on the negative side (which is after all, how you learn... isn't it?) -

The first one's OOF to me and not a 'keeper'.

A number of the others are OOF, but the blurring looks like movement blur due to the size of the subject in the frame.

ALWAYS have a face in your shots (unless it's an exceptional capture).

Your horizons need to be levelled, in some.

You need to crop tighter, in some.

Good shots though and I'm not really in a position to criticise any of them cos I've never shot baseball!!

Thanks. On some of the crops I was afraid to take much more out because I was already cropping pretty heavily.

It also looks like you're cropping too much (as in you're loosing a lot of detail because you're blowing up the pixels).

40D + 70-200 f/2.8 should not be giving you this soft of a picture even without sharpening.

I stayed in the same spot throughout the shooting and could have used more reach on quite a few of the shots. I tried to get the frame I wanted through cropping, but this required some pretty major crops. After reviewing some photos, I am wondering if I might have had a front-focusing issue as well. It is not my lens, so I am not sure about this. I am going to test my camera today and see if that's what it is.

I just did a focus test with my 50mm f/1.8, it's posted in the camera section. To me, it seems that my camera is front focusing. Could be the 50mm though:confused:
