Hi guys... again :)

Lately it was pretty busy, with 7 or 8 races in last 20 days and more then 2000km in car in between races, so these photos are history already. But nevertheless I still managed to get few days of skiing on my own :) And another good thing is, that last weekend was my last weekend in 2008/09 season shotting alpine skiing. I'm skipping World cup finals in Are, Sweden this week, so we had farewell party with most of us who are lucky enough not to be in Sweden this week. Few photographers with some beer on one day, and few servicemen, coaches and races the other day, so it was pretty cool end of season.... even if it was snowing like hell all 3 days we have spent in Ofterschwang, Germany. But more about this in next post or two, which will definitely be last ones about alpine skiing for this season... I promise :D
But now to photos and all races till here :) One of places that are traditionally on men's World cup calendar is night race in Schladming, Austria. As it tradition already, weather is really sh**ty, but this doesn't prevent more then 50.000 spectators to show on hill. This year we were lucky, and it was "just" snowing pretty bad. Last year it was raining badly, and hour before race rain turned into snow. So this year, I can't complain too much :)

After Tuesday afternoon/night in Schladming, I popped home for day, and already on Thursday morning, I was on my way to Garmisch, Germany. Garmisch was quite cool, except that I manage to sprain my ankle, and after more then one month, I still feel this when I put skiing boots on. We spent whole day on mountain on Saturday just waiting for races to start, but after about 6 hours on mountain, at sub 0 temperatures, both races were finally canceled. So Sunday's program all of a sudden changed to pretty busy one. Men slalom race on one location, then 30mins after start there was start of women Super-G race on another location about 10km away, and before women race was over, second run of men slalom race started already. We were lucky to be two of us there, so I was covering women SG, while colleague was covering men's slalom. Next to that I managed to catch last 15 men in second run, so everything turned out pretty cool.

After Garmisch, there was little break for me, since I didn't go to Val d'Isere for World Championships. I didn't mind too much because of this... 2 weeks at home is afterall 2 weeks at home :) And next to that, I'm 99% sure, I will be on next one in 2 years in Garmisch.
So after break, there was another speed weekend in Tarvisio, Italy. Super combined race, downhill and super-g races were held in 3 days, and once for a change weather was really perfect. Sunny and warm, so I was actually standing up on hill in t-shirt only :) Only problem was course. It's really nice course for skiing, but there's absolutely no decent position for photographers. I was doing blind jumps for two days, and I hate doing it this way. On Friday's super combined downhill, I was counting seconds after I heard skier landing on jump above me, and when I counted till 3, I pressed shutter and let it go for 5 or 6 frames, out of which 2 were good ones, and others were to delete :) But photos were pretty nice.

For last day, I moved to third position, and once for a change I didn't have blind jump to shoot. Even though nicest photos for me of that day, were actually blind shots again.

But I run out of space, so more will follow in another thread :)

And as always... any kind of comments are more then welcome :)

Take care,
primoz

Nice series of pics again. The last ones looks interesting with dark background.
I think you used manual mode for those shots?
Did I understant this correctly that you mostly shoot those competitors who perform well and fight for the top places or do you shoot all competitors?

Basically I shoot everyone somewhere to number 40 or 45, so I have those who finish in top 10. Normally there's not much chances someone with number 60 would finish in top 10, but it can still happen. After that, I shoot just those who I need, which are nowadays in first row Finns and Swedes, and then French, Italians, Slovenians and Germans.
Last 3 photos were all shot with manual focus. It was blind jump, and I didn't see skiers coming, so there was no time for af to track them before I would start shooting. So I set focus to gate, made small correction, so that focus was about 1.5m infront of gate where I was expecting they will ski, and then I counted a bit on luck and a bit on 8.5fps of my 1dmk2 :) As I wrote before, for #6 and #7 I heard them when they landed on previous jump, and then I was counting when they will be on my jump :) It sounds pretty funny, but it actually works.
For #8, I saw TV camera guy above me, and when he started to track them above break (I was under the break), I knew they were coming. Second or two later, I heard wind swish just before they came to my view, and when I heard that, I pressed shutter, and again got 6 or 7 photos out of which 2 were with skier on. This is certainly one way to do this, but personally I hate doing it this way. I rather play it safe, and this way it's definitely not safe way ;)

Did he make that gate in the first photo Primoz? There isn't much edge left on those skis. Nice.

Yup he did make this and next gate :) Angles these guys are skiing are really extreme, so most of times it really looks like they won't make it, but normally they still do without much of problems :)

Primoz, again, wonderful series. The first one really shines and you make a great point about how extreme the conditions are. Rarely do photos and tv show just how steep the pitch is and certainly they don't convey how icy. The mere fact that youhave to wear crampons to shoot speaks to that. Those men and women on the FIS WC are amazing athletes and its hard to appreciate just how amazing unless you've seen them race. You do very well in bringing a piece of it here Primoz so thanks, I love see your images (although I am done with snow and winter at this point!!! )

Me too... well actually it depends :) I have 3 more days of shooting (ski jumping World cup finals on end of next week), and then no more shooting skiing for this winter. But now it's time to get some skiing myself, so I'm not done with snow and winter yet. It's starting tomorrow already with some hopefully perfect alpine skiing, following with ice hockey tournament on Sunday, where I hope they won't break all my bones  And winter will end for me with about 10 days of skiing in Levi, Finland, on end of April  So there's still lot of winter infront of me, and I'm actually happy about it. Somehow I don't think I could ever get fed up with snow and cold :)

enjoy it my friend! I got injured this winter so I only got out twice all winter and that has made it tough for sure. We also don't have the terrain you do so maybe that all explains why I want a beach instead!:lol:

Primoz, Great action sports shots. This is the first time I have seen your work. I would have to say they are some of the best sports shots I have seen on here! Thanks for sharing!
