Ended up buying a Ranger Speed AS kit and the Quadra Rx 2-head kit. Picked up a deep octa, 135 cm Octa, 100x100 cm square softbox and a few other things like grids. Used the Quadras and Deep Octa in a shoot the other day and loved the results. Thanks for having such an open and useful forum!

Hah, that's a lot of stuff! Congrats :)

I just played around with the 50x130 strip box I bought for my buddy, and I have to say that while its got the usual Rotalux build quality, I'm seeing almost 1.5 stops difference from center to edge. Using a deflector with both diffusors helps a little, but not much.
How do other brand strip boxes compare here?

Hey Guys
Stumbeld across this thread and the Ranger vs Quadra thread awhile back. Found some very useful info that helped me decide to buy...............both. I am interesting in knowing after a fair bit of use which system would be your favourite: Quadra or Ranger Speed?

Every Rotalux modifier can just fold down ( a la umbrella-style) and do into its case. The rods stay in the locking collars of the speed ring and in the corner pockets of the modifier.

There's no reason to ever remove the rods or completely break it down unless you want to store it flat.

Im scared! It feels like its stretching the softbox too tight when I fold it up! Even with the rods invertered (flipped inwards to allow it to fold up more).

But if you guys say so... I guess Ive just gotta get over it and let it sit folded up.

As long as the rods are in place it's a sturdy well constructed product. Don;t be afraid of putting some stress on it. Even the 1.75m large Octa goes nicely in it's case.

Hi Ben,

I can't say I've experienced what you're describing but I can definitely tell you that everything is very tight when you first use a Rotalux Octa. I think that most people (even if they won't admit it) had some trouble either setting up or breaking down an Octa (the DO in particular) the first few times until they got the feel and hang of it.

I set up and break down my octas without even giving it a thought but I vividly remember struggling with it the first time for nearly 30 minutes, even taking a break to clear my head...lolol

Oh yea, Im not afraid to admit my frustration, this thing really freaked me out the first time! I imagine had I started with the 69" I would have lost it! That thing HAS to be a bear to deal with! I should be getting the 39" DO in a couple weeks too, so Ill deal with that challenge soon. I guess I just gotta let this 53" loosen up more before itll start getting easier.

Thanks guys, as always I feel better after running it past you!

10 to 20 times of setting up and breaking down will make a difference in the feel but even after a few times you'll find those little tricks and ways to hold it and where to apply pressure.

The larger octas are actually easier because they're not under as much tension as the 39" Deep Octa. Do yourself a favor and get very comfortable with the 53" and then the DO won't seem like a Rubik's Cube :)

So after adding nothing of technical value to this thread I thought I would at least try.

So I wanted to see how far the ELS Transmitter SPEED would go befre the 500 BXRi wouldnt fire. I ran out of road before that happened.

For all the tests it was my 17-55mm at 17mm
first test was pretty lame. I hand held it and well this is what I got

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4081/4899931489_53586448b7_b.jpg
This is 5 houses down from the 500 BXRi

So then it was time to get the tripod out.

This is over 100 yards. I counted 120 but I am not exact.
IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4117/4900523158_943d1e4121_b.jpg

To my back is the intersection.

So how useful is this? not at all but now you should have confidence that it will fire.
