thought id ask in here while im at it

2 things

1. So the RX triggers work with the RX systems right, what about the universals, will they work with my dlite4? I dont really need them in my apartment but I figured I may need them when I get to some location stuff.

2. Should I get the 7" reflector for umbrella or that mini plastic looking reflector (6.5" i think?) with umbrella, im worried about hotspots, and is their a way to keep the pole in the strobe from sliding? I i didnt see a thing to keep it from going anywhere (unless that comes with the umbrella itself)

thanks

Even in my garage, I use triggers. Hate to trip over a cord, or have someone else trip over a cord.

Well, I got my 400bx kit today from FedEx. I read through the manual.... I know I'm anal about that stuff and then hooked them up. Well one light works just fine (both strobe and modeling lamp) but the other one has a problem. The modeling light doesn't work!

My first thought was that maybe the lamp bulb was bad. So I switched the working lamp to the non working 400bx. Still nothing. I then tried the "thought to be bad" bulp in the 400bx that was working. The bulb worked just fine in that 400bx.

Then I thought it must be the modeling fuse. Checked it out and it looks fine but I switched it out anyways. I just can't get the modeling light to work on this one 400bx. Anything simple I should be trying? I don't want to have to send these back if I don't have too. I've waited too long and I just want it to work.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

My 13 x 69 is in the mail. I hope to find out why it is so spendy next week.
Chris

Did you get it?

btw, I found a nice video on youtube with a demo of the 13x69. Gives very nice directional dramatic lighting but $953! ;)

Hmmm....sounds like you've swapped working parts out and no combination is working on the seemingly dead light. I think beyond what you've done, it's a call/trip to Elinchrom.

Well i can now chime in and keep strictly on-topic after picking up my "kit" yesterday. I decided i couldn't wait for the Rx600 kit to arrive in Singapore so headed back to the supplier to pick up either a Bx or Fx 400 kit.
They only had the Fx in stock so i settled on that (the lack of plug-in flash didn't bother me greatly as i'm a sparky by trade).
It's a nice kit and i picked up some extras as they are currently offering 40% off all Elinchrom accessories that aren't already discounted as kit extras.

So for the official bit:
2 Style FX 400
2 Modelling Lamp
2 Power Cable
1 Sync Cable (5m)
1 Reflector (16cm)
2 Protective Hood
1 Portalite (66 x 66cm)
1 Translucent Deflector
1 Softbag (for 2 heads)
1 Umbrella (Silver, 83cm)
1 Umbrella (Translucent, 83cm)
2 Stand (88 x 235cm)
1 Carrying Bag

The extras i picked up were the Barn Doors (Set 21) and standard reflector to suit.

Sat through the dvd this morning and just had a bit of a play. Very easy to use. Well built kit. Good sturdy stands. Happy days!!

The lack of a user-replaceable bulb is not really a problem if you buy a brand with local after-sales support. The only difference is that you will have to take your light down to your dealer and they will take care of it for you. If it had a user-replaceable bulb you would still have to go down to the dealer to purchase the bulb (which they might not have in stock at all times), so there is no real difference. I would try and avoid the temptation to replace it yourself, even if you are "qualified".

Yeah it's only a last resort if i needed to do it myself (like after warranty and if i'm no longer in Singapore). Whilst i'm still based in Singapore it's a non-issue for me to carry a light back if required for replacement.

Elinchrom have great support here in Oz (at least on the east coast), and I'm pretty sure you will be able to get good service in Perth. If you ever have an issue, I can put your in touch with my guy (he's in Sydney but he would take good care of you somehow - put you in touch with someone local or sort out mailing stuff to you, whatever).

Congratulations on the new gear!

I'm getting ready to switch over to Elinchrom, but I'm not sure what options are available in beauty dish brands and what adapters I might need. The 22" Speedtron looks nice (grid compatible), but not sure what it takes to mount to Elinchrom. Does the PCB fit with some sort of adapter?

Thanks.

I don't believe the PCB dish is going to be able to be modified because of the size of the opening. It's smaller than the Elinchrom mount and you can't just replace the insert ring.

Question for all of you RX series owners. While I've chosen to forgo going to the RX series for my next strobe purchase I would like to future proof the rest of my purchases, and the first I'd like to make is a Pelican. Now I from what I can see, the 1610 w/ Dividers (1614) should fit 4x RX strobes with cabling and whatnot. Could someone who's run this set up or has the gear confirm this for me?

That may work, but I prefer to go a bit larger to carry a few extra necessities in my pelican box for studio gear (light meter, skyports, speedrings, grids, extra batteries/fuses, power/tether cables, etc.) so I went ahead and ordered a second Pelican 1654 (I already own/love my first 1654 that I use for camera gear). It perfectly fits 4 600RX's/power cords, the ABR800/power & sync cords, 3 speedrings, 3 grids, sekonic L-758dr, skyport case (holds 4 receivers, a transmitter, and usb dongle), 9.25" wide angle reflector, and a 7" grid reflector. I plan on picking up the 1659 organizer thing for the lid (have and use one for my other pelican) for room for my fuses and batteries and other various things.

hope that helps!

That does help quite a bit, thank you! Do you by chance have a pic of your 1654 completely loaded floating around?

didn't have one lying around as I just got my second pelican 1654 last week, and that's the one that I use for my studio lights.

I did, however, bust out a camera and took a quick shot....so don't fault me for nasty white balance! :)

600RX's on the right side. ABR800 in lower left side. grids and speedrings in top left, and sekonic L-758dr & elinchrom skyport case in the top center.

Also, for you non-believers out there doubting my ability to put 4 skyport RX's in the case that came with 2 skyport receivers and a transmitter....see below. I'll make you all believers in no time! :p

Thanks Jeff,

I didn't even think about laying 2 transceivers in the Skyport case as you did in one slot. Good idea. I couldn't imagine how you were doing that.

What does the color coding on the handles of your RX's signify?
