It's far from stunning, but I just wanted to share my very first shot with my new Canon 100mm macro!

Thanks for the comment. I don't think it's overexposed, and I am basing my opinion on detail visible in the very light parts of the flower.

It does appear that my focus was a little off, as the closest 1-2mm of the flower is out of focus, and this initially led me to believe it was overexposed too. Definitely should have shot it at f/8 or so, and this may not have been an issue.

As far as ISO 2500, I used auto ISO on the 5D II, then Av mode at 5.6; I was fine with the camera picking this ISO and happy with the shutter speed (girlfriend was holding my black coat behind the subject, and I wasn't certain how still she would keep). From my tests so far, anything through ISO 3200 seems quite usable on this camera, so I've been comfortable using auto ISO... Maybe I should pay more attention?

Excellent first shot. as you get more familiar with the capabilites of this lens, you may want to drop the ISO and or lighting just a tad. it gives it a more overall warmer look.

Thanks :)

And to address the earlier post again, I may be mistaken in my understanding of what causes a shot to look overexposed. I looked for patches of #FFFFFF data, and absent this evidence of highlight blowout, determined it wasn't overexposed. I probably have the wrong approach here :)

Good start. As you are finding you need to check the background of the shots to make sure it is not too distracting.
