About to travel south for the first time. I have never flown international since I got into photography and had some quesitons regarding rules in Lithium Ion Batteries (specifically the BP-511A's).

I searched some other posts and found alot of people saying contrary to rumors there are no restrictions on batteries, which contradicts everything I have read.

The Canada Air Transportation security screening website and it states that Lithium Ion Batt's containing more than 2g of Lithium (each) are not allowed on carry on and NO spare lithium ion batteries allowed in checked luggage. All I could find was that each battery wieghs 82g. How much of that is lithium?

i recently flew 17 connections on my recent travels with a mixture of domestic and international.

i brought my BP-511A's on board and there were no issues with security at all. they were more concerned about the clip on my binder =|

Trust the threads with input from Flying with Fish and Flying Photographer in them. They're both very well versed in the topic, and both have said there's no problem.

No problems here. I took 4 to Athens and back via Heathrow, without an issue. The children's changing bag on the other hand, got searched everywhere.

We used to pack powdered formula along with us on trips. I lost count of the number of times our diaper bags were swabbed for evidence of evil intent.

This is a retarded country we live in now. I feel like I'm looked down upon when I so much as walk around the st patrick's day event in downtown with a dSLR around my neck. People stare and seem to worry, and this one woman who worked at a stand that sold sunglasses even said I wasn't allowed to take pictures of their stuff. I went with the sole purpose of practicing my technique and trying to exercise my creativity, and that's the kind of reaction people have to my wielding a camera.

Paranoid, sick, retarded country, scared of the photographers, scared they're either pedophiles or something else really evil.

Oh yes, of course....never had any issues with my batteries on the plane. Did have a minor issue once where they saw my tiny tripod in my backpack.

Thanks all for the replies. After doing some more extensive research I found that each cell in a BP511A contains 0.417g of lithium (so 0.834 per BP-511A). Well under the allowable limit of 2g per battery.

Now the 1DmkIII and 1DsmkIII batteries come in just over the allowable limit at 2.07g....just in case anyone was curious.

Next project.....getting the airline to let my fiance carry on her wedding dress as well as a carry on bag!!

Ummm, I did 30,000+ miles in 4.5 days with my BP-511s, then 22,000 miles in 3.5 days with my BP-511A. Last weekend in 47hrs I flew New York-Paris-Amsterdam-New York, followed by a quick flight down to Tampa and back in under 24hrs....and countless other flights around the world. I have never had a problem.

The battery restrictions do apply to CHECKED BAGGAGE , don't check batteries. Carry on is no problem what so ever. The original battery ruling came from the US Dept of Transportation's Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, who passed the unenforceable ruling to the US DHS's TSA. The TSA chose to quite literally ignore the ruling from the DOT PHMSA regarding carry-on allowances, as the DOT's PHMSA has no authority over air travel.

This is a link to my write up on the 'final ruling' for flying with batteries, as it was issued on the 2nd of January 2008, it should clear things up:
