Buy a 40D or a 50D?

Now that the 50D has been out for a little while now, I'd like to make an informed decision... I was all set to buy a 50D, but then I read about ISO Noise issues and sharpness issues.

If you had the money, would you purchase a 40D or a 50D?

I'd like technical reasons if possible, in addition to the personal ones. I've read conflicting reviews and reasons; I've heard the sharpness is due to poor quality lenses, which isn't too much of a concern to me as I have some L-series glass.

I appreciate any help here...

Go for the 50D

Sorry i wont go into to detail. there is way to much on this topic already for this forum. Just use the search tab and search for 50D noise or 40D vs 50D.

Hear are some links...

https://photography-on-the.net …45511&highlight=50d+noise

https://photography-on-the.net …103&highlight=better+pics

Just disable some in camera settings and you will be taking pictures just as good as the 40D.

...

The 50D....and I did.

Why ?
It is the later model with more features.

I'll bet few people will look back and say I wished I'd bought the 40D instread. But if you buy the 40D....you'll always wonder, what if.

Go for the 50D. I did have a 40D which is a top body, but my 50D is better.

If you can afford it buy the 50D I had the 40D as well and for me they just don't compare the 50D makes everything easier color-wise exposure-wise noise-wise etc.

I have a 40D. I'm extremely happy with it and have no plans to change anytime soon. It'll be a long time before my skill exceeds the capabilities of the camera.

If I were buying right now and faced with the choice I'd probably go for the 50D. Why not?

50d, because technically it's a better camera;-)a

really, it is. Takes a little more effort to get to know it thats all. but dont worry about that too much, you'll love it straight out of the box.

i have a 40D, and used my friend's 50D, its got a couple more features, but still similar enough that I won't upgrade to it, maybe the 60D, etc...

the 30D to 40D seems to be a much bigger gap than 40D to 50D

I had both cameras in my hand and an advantage of the 50d is a better lcd and better button placement at the back. But I have to say there is a slight difference in noise in favour of the 40d. But after doing some noice reduction it's barely visible, especially in small prints.
But now we have to ask:

- do you really need the extra MP?
- do you really need to have better button placement?
- do you need a better LCD?... to pay extra for it?

If you don't need extra MP I would stick with 40d. I did the same :). I agree with rolex87 but 50d is also a great cam - if money isn't the problem get it :)

30D to 40D bigger gap than 40D to 50D I don't think so, with 30D to 40D you get: bigger LCD but not much better, 2MB more and a few extra things but from 40D to 50D you get: better LCD much better actually 5MP more + Micro Adjustment Just this feature makes a huge difference and of course a few extra things, the upgrades on 50D are more important than the upgrades on the 40D from the 30D.

the 50d is newer and has more features, but still, they are both awesome cameras. i just bought the 40d the other day. i wanted to upgrade from my 400d to a 5d but didn't have enough money so i chose the 40d until i have the extra cash to get the full frame. i say, if you plan on upgrading again then get the 40d and save the extra money. the jump between the 40 and 50 isn't THAT big, from what i've read.

40D, canon 135mm L, 50mm f1.8, 28-70mm L, macbook pro, tripod, shoebox lid, 50D MKII next on the list:D

Noise levels are better on the 50D if comparing images at the same size of the 40D. This is a fact so basically the 50D handles better noise than the 40D at the same MP or Resolution level, if you compare both camera images at their original Resolution, yea the 50D will be noisier but for such a small margin that it is almost pointless to discus. Like I said if you can afford it buy the 50D if not buy the 40D the 40D is a great camera just not better than the 50D but it will be capable of producing the same quality images as the 50D but with a little bit more of work, Like I mentioned before the 50D makes everything easier. One of the big differences I love about my 50D is the way it can handle exposures, before with my 40D I would have many pictures underexposed or overexposed but with my 50D everything is almost perfect all the time, AF is also better on the 50D, with my 40D I would get out of focus images many times, with my 50D 99% of my pictures are in focus, I only use center focus the same I did with my 40D but the 50D seams to focus better than the 40D. I find the upgrade value worthwhile for these and many other reasons, if you like to do more pp then get the 40D if not then get the 50D.

I had read something about the 40D having better color and contrast processing -- any truth or real noticeability in that?

50D, unless you are a bit tight for money. That's the only reason you should get the 40D.

If I were in the market right now I would most likely go for the 50D. The better LCD and micro adjustment being the main reasons. That being said, neither is enough for me to even consider upgrading from my 40D.
