I finally got around to PSing two more frost close ups. Besides each one being infinitely different, I really appreciate being able to shoot them from inside a warm house! ;)

Again, I played around with PS Blend Modes.

I liked it a lot, too. Thanks for the comment!

Ma Nature's Rorschach test? I was disappointed that there were no falcons this time.

Last one is great. You should try some crazy post processing just for fun on these.

Sometimes I'd see something similar to the day before. Sometimes it would be very different! It must have been the difference in temperature, because nothing else had been changed? It's a great excuse to not wash the windows I use for them! :D

I did in one thread this year, & one time I shot with two strobes with red & blue gells.

Thanks for the comments!

Give it a try next year! Here's a hint: don't wash the inside of the outside window this year.

I've seen the same frost patterns on single pane garage windows, & even on the windows of my car, so there's no good excuse to avoid trying this. ;)

A good tutorial on blend modes will get you started on separating the frost from the background:
Photoshop's Five Essential Blend Modes For Photo Editing (external link)

Photographic tips by Jim Talkington. (external link) Includes videos for studio work for product photography, still life, macro or portraiture, including using the rig below. (Look for it. Learn something!) ;)

If you don't have a close-up or macro lens or extension tubes, this is the combination of lenses I used for this one: the 85mm f/1.8 with a reversed 50mm f/1.4 Nikkor taped to it.

It works, but it's certainly not as nice as shooting with a true macro lens as the working distance is a close 2".
I put some pussy willow shots here if you would like to see more from that lens combination.

How can the working distance be 2 inches from the image plane when the lens looks to be 6"+?
