17-55mm 2.8 EF-S--A good lens for basketball?

Is the Canon 17-55mm 2.8 EF-S a good lens for basketball? Currently, I shoot with a 10-22 on my Canon 40D, but it's a little slow (f stop wise) and a little too wide for underneath the basket.

Just wondering if others use the 17-55 for sports, especially basketball. Thanks in advance for your perspectives.

Hank

Hi Hank
The 17-55 is a fantastic lens.
For Basketball I would think is still a bit wide even at 55mm but it all depends where you are at the court and your style of shooting.
Since you have the 10-22 you could consider the 24-70 f2.8?
I shoot a bit of kids baseball and my daughter's ice skating , for that Im using the 70-200 f4 (I wish I could afford the f2.8).
I am considering the 85 f1.8...

But the 17-55 is a great all around lens, if you think is the right focal length for you.
Cheers

Being under the basket only the 17-55mm would probably work but if you are trying to get shots of the opposing bench, or other side of the court you may be wanting more. Personally, the 24-70 f/2.8L sounds like a good option and would be what I would go with.

EF 85/1.8, probably the best lens ever made for indoor basketball.

I should have mentioned that I also use a 70-200 f2.8, and the 17-55 would be used on my other camera.

Thanks to all who have commented.

Well you have a great combo going there..

I would still take a look at the 24-70 f2.8 for basketball.
It would complement your 10-22 nicely and give you some reach and speed

Either way again the 17-55 is a fantastic lens

i hope you find what you need ;)

cheers

My concern with the 24-70 is that it won't be wide enough (on the crop body) for shots of the huddle during time outs and that sort of thing. By my math, the 24 is a 38 (equivalent) and I think I'll need something wider in the small gyms around here.

Then is pretty much a no brainer and you have found your answer already

You have two bodys one with your 70-200 and a second for your wider shots with the 17-55.

Is a killer combination

have fun

I don't own the 17-55, however, I did recently shoot a BBall game using 2 primes. My 28mm 1.8 & Nifty fifty. The light was good in this gym. I could have easily changed to f2.8 and made great pictures.
If the lighting is poor, you might not do so well with a f2.8.

By the way, I was sitting at court edge. If you were way back in the stands, you might wish you had a 70-200 2.8 IS.

The attached pic has this info:
ISO 800 (you could use 1600 at f2.8)
1/250
f1.8
28mm

Totally agree. f2.8 is too slow.

Oh. I thought you might want to see a shot where they are actually running to check for blur.
This shot has the exact same stats as the other one previously uploaded.

Funny thing, in the first shot I thought they all had poison ivy or something and were scratching it.
