CPP is Canon Photo Professional, supplied as free software with several Canon DSLR models. I'm pretty sure the answer to my question is "No".

Good tutorial, thanks!

I imagine you mean "DPP", meaning the Canon software Digital Photo Professional, which is a very nice (and free) app for Raw processing!

You're right. I came back to correct my mistake but found you had beaten me to it! DPP is very good, I agree, but I don't think it handles layers.

You're correct -- DPP doesn't handle layers or other "fancy stuff" like that. DPP, like other Raw processing software (Lightroom, Camera Raw, Aperture) keeps to processing things in a way that can be stored as a "description" while keeping the Raw data intact and doesn't delve into the graphical complexities that Photoshop and other image processors specialize in. That's why having both types of app can be very useful!

No, like was said, DPP and Lightroom work off the Raw processing model whereas Photoshop and other graphical editors give graphcs capabilities.

You can get some very capable graphics editors for relatively inexpensive or even free. Photoshop Elements can be had for ~$100 USD, Gimp can be gotten for free.

i've never used gimp, but i have used photoshop elements and each of the cs family of photoshop and really elements has pretty much everything the average person would need. alot of the tools are the same, just hidden in different places
