Maybe because it's 3:43am?

But I am mightily at loggerheads with myself. I'll be finished my B.Eng in two months time, I've been headhunted into a very fortunate position and have yet to turn 21.

So, of course the intelligent thing to do is scrap it all and move to Canada, which is in the pipes.
The company asked if I could work right up until I go, and that if I came back...but we're going anyway.

Ireland has disillusioned me beyond belief, I can see now how it wound up being a nation of drunkards.
Bleak and sapping of the will to live. Begrudging and full of doom and gloom, vested interests and general yuck. Live 9-5 and then do 9-5 again as a Nightwalker. Rinse, repeat.
Pay me what you like, it's the attitude of the place that gets to you.

So, I can't even take proper photos, but I just want to abandon everything and take photos.
Thanks guys, at least I have some solace :)

What province are you thinking of moving to?

I felt the same way about my job in Australia (photographer for a newspaper for 17 years) the last 3 years of employment..

In early '07 I went back to my studies attaining my Diploma of TESOL.. I moved to Laos with my wife in late '07,who has been working there on and off since '04 in Development Aid.. I'm now teaching ESL and will for the next five years or so.. Moving and working in a foreign country, especially a developing country is one heck of a rewarding experience.. I can recommend it..

I've heard that Alberta is quite the area jobs-wise, although with the oil industry, that fluctuates wildly? It's daunting, and no matter what, I'm not coming back to Ireland.
Is anyone there, in the Electronics industry? It seems stable enough, not a boom-profession as manual labour was here during the Celtic Tiger years. Monitoring through our friends in Fredericton and on as many career websites as possible.

Consequently, I hope the Irish aren't regarded in Canada as the Eastern Europeans are here - the no dogs, no blacks, no Irish may become prevalent all over again, but I doubt it.
I'm entering on a years' work permit and would be classed as a skilled migrant, ought to ease things.
I'll be making every move to Canadianise myself, not running about speaking only broken English, and Polish/Latvian/Lithuanian to their friends when you're trying to serve them.

At least you've got something interesting to take pictures of. I'm near quebec and it's absolutely gross, grey and brown everyday. Ireland looks beautiful, but I'm sure you think the same way about it over here!

Not much of an electronics industry in Alberta unfortunately. This area of the world is highly dependent on the oil&gas industry/petrochemicals, forestry and farming. Much of the manufacturing in Alberta is to support the oil and petrochemical industries.

Since November there have been massive job losses for engineering as the large EPC firms downsize with the drop in oil price. As seen in the US, projects to support the oil and gas industires have dropped 60%. Engineering firms have destaffed by about the same amount.

Also, the reported unemployment rate for Alberta is a nice work of fiction as much of the skilled labour is from out of province. As those people have been laid off with the cancellation of projects they have returned to their home provinces to collect unemployment insurance there.

I don't want to paint such a gloomy picture to discourage you from coming, because there are a lot of great places to call home here. I just want to encourage you to really do your homework first. To answer your one concern though I think you'd be surprised at how multicultural it is throughout Canada, so I wouldn't be concerned at all about being accepted or fitting in where ever you settle. One of the things I love about where i work is that it's like the United Nations :), which is especially good when we have a pot luck lunch.

Hey! I'm from Edmonton and am jealous that there are so many interesting things to photograph in your province! It can be really challenging for me to find anything to take photos of when outdoors this time of the year... snow, snow and more snow, followed by brown snow and mucky roads in a couple of weeks ... then by the end of April hopefully we'll see some green show up in the river valley.

Take your opportunity and have fun with it. Canada is a beautiful country with great people (some of the friendliest i know).

There is also enough scenery there to keep you photographing for years.

Also if you get bored you can always go shooting other ways (they have lots of guns there!)

I'm an archer...so that's dinner sorted!

I really hope I can land a permanent position somewhere, I've been shunted all over the world (SA->UK->IRE) and this move is on my terms :D

You do have to admit there is a fair sized amount of the population that shoot (either for fun or sport)

I was over in TO and went in to Vaughn Mills mall via the Bass Pro shop. I thought i was in the armoury at Fort Bragg!
