You do have to admit there is a fair sized amount of the population that shoot (either for fun or sport)

I was over in TO and went in to Vaughn Mills mall via the Bass Pro shop. I thought i was in the armoury at Fort Bragg!

There still are a fair number of people that hunt, particularly in areas like northern Alberta. Pretty typical for any country (including european countries) where there are large wilderness areas. For example, I worked with a group of people from Finland a number of years ago and their project director was passionate about hunting and brought his gun with him everytime he visited.

And certainly there are people that shoot at ranges for sport/fun (Emonton with a population close to a million has two shooting ranges), I just don't know any. But IMO there are very few that have handguns in their homes for protection. Maybe Toronto is different though ... I have no idea.

OK...so...November 30th, 9:40am...

And it sunk in when I went shopping for snow boots yesterday! We'll give it a year, and if we're not in permanent positions after that, I think it's fair to call it a day and head south :D

Cape Town would be so much warmer!

I made the mistake of visiting in the winter and i didnt have the right boots (just a pair of walking boots that i took across) and boy did my feet feel cold!

Saying that I would probably emigrate there if SWMBO would agree to it.

I've just picked up my Meindl Army Pros, so the boots front is sorted.

I just wish the employment front was the same. I've not been there yet, but since the Irish government in their ineffable wisdom, made education free, 95% of under-25s have degrees in XYZ, and about 5% know what they're doing with them....and so, you can be far better in your field than most, but because you've not done a Masters, employers won't look at you here :S.

Talk about killing enthusiasm. I'd do a Masters because I liked what I was doing...not as a 'requirement' for everyday jobs that 5-10 years ago only required a diploma.
