I was just browsing Canon's website (external link) and came across this bit of news:

In pursuit of higher-density CMOS sensors, Canon has developed a 50-megapixel APS-H size CMOS sensor that realizes more than twice the image resolution of 10-megapixel-class digital single-lens reflex cameras. Even when used for wide-angle shots, the new CMOS sensor enables the identification of a license plate number 300 meters away.

The new high-density CMOS sensor offers a range of potential applications, including parts inspection systems in factories, and parking lot surveillance cameras.

"Sweet!"

But no mention of application for photography. Probably has other "issues" rendering it not suitable.

I knew there was a reason my wife argued against the purchase of a 50D! Thats the sensor res I need for motorsports with reasonable priced lenses. I could actually afford to crop at last.

I was looking for a direct reference to photography as in DSLR but I didn't find any.

Can you even imagine the cost of adding something like this to a semi-to-pro line camera?

semi-fly,

Technology is like a juggernaut without any brakes. That 50 will become 100, then 200. Computers will get more memory, more parrallel processing and go ever faster. Pixel peeping at 200 meg is going to be very detailed indeed. Bring it on.

sounds like medium format to me, which i dont completely understand, aparently the sensor is like 7x7 INCHES and because of that you can fit an EFF load of pixels, nasa uses them and comercial studios like sears use them...

There is a limit tho,

the size of the largest light wave...

Going smaller than it is pointless!! :)

How does a 50MP sensor resolve twice a 10MP sensor?

Because you'd need twice the resolution in both planes to resolve twice the amount of detail, as detail is not one dimensional. A 40MP sensor would resolve twice the amount of detail than a 10MP sensor, making a 50MP sensor able to resolve ~2.5x the amount of detail that a 10MP sensor can.

Edit for clarity: The plane that is the sensor is a 2 dimensional square, and as such you're dealing with an exponential scale, not a linear scale, when it comes to resolution. 20MP is twice the data of 10MP, but not twice the square resolution.

So, like 50x75 at 260dpi? (Going by my 10mp 20x30 at 130 dpi - math probably very wrong.)

A little less actually, 2.24x (square root of 5). Excuse me for being picky.
