I upgraded from a rebel xt (used) to a 40d with 28-135 kit lens,a 100 2.8 macro and a 70-300mm from b&h and I guess the 70-300 is a grey version since I can't register it with canon. b&h says it is warrented thru them for 1 year. So is a grey market item one that can't pass canon quality to get a date stamp? also the 100 macro came without a warrenty card is this normal?

Grey market usually means no USA Warranty. It should have come with an international one. I would ask B&H about the warranty card on the macro. You should be able to handle this online without the physical card, though.

B&H in New York is definitely one of the most reputable camera etc sellers around. I do not know what you mean by an "international company"?

I don't know what you mean by "pass canon quality to get a date stamp."

As for warranties, Canon USA will honor the service warranty of any Canon lens bought from an authorized US reseller (which includes B&H), even if it is a "gray" lens.

In all cases, whether gray or not, they will want to see the sales receipt, only the sales receipt, and nothing but the sales receipt. They will accept the warranty card alone if you plead, but they really want the receipt.

Remember that B&H is closed on Saturdays. So maybe that's why you never received a response to your e-mail yet. Just a thought.

I have spent several thousands with B-H and Adorama. Majority has been Gray Market items thru B-H and Reburbs thru Adorama never had a problem yet with a gray market or Refurbs. (knock on wood). I did purchase the Mack 3 yr warranty on the 30D body and 7 yr warranty on 28-135 IS lens thru Adorama this time.
I you ever get a chance- go to B-H in NYC. WOW- I felt like a kid in a candy store. All the workers were very pleasant to talk with, and busy,,, my god they are busy. The 3 story building is massive ( like a 3 story Sams/Walmart) with nothing but every photo and video equipment made---- I thought I died and went to heaven.
