Wife wants one............Canon PowerShot G10???

Guys/Gals,

My wife expressed that she would like a G10. You can see what I currently use in my signature. Anyway I've been reading the comments in the forum about this camera and I must say there are all good. If I may ask a couple question.

What is a fair market price for the camera in US Dollars? I see the $409.00 on Amazon. But thats not including shipping.

What is the best case for the camera that doesn't cost a fortune?

Its not a DSLR. In my opinion, that is the best and worst thing I can say about mine. I use mine as a shirt pocket camera, for candids and such. It is small, almost too small for me, and the menus don't have alot in common with what you are used to, but with only two weeks of use I am getting used to it pretty quickly. I agree that it is limited to 400 ISO and below for acceptable noise, but its quick to focus and has more features to play with than I will ever really master.
the 409 sounds about right, although I have seen them for much less. I got mine through an employee buying program my company provides me with dell computers for exactly that price.
I got the 'official canon leather' case that is available only overseas- mine came from Japan for 80 bucks including shipping. The brown leather case costs more and looks better. I am a big guy and the thing still fits in my 2xl shirt pockets in the case.
It is great protection for the camera, but offers no compartments for cards or batteries.
I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY with my new toy.

Got a G9 when they came out and upgraded to a G10 when it came out. Can't complain about either. Its with me whenever I leave the house.

The G10 is a fine camera, you cannot go wrong with it. But can you tell us why she wants one? I ask because my wife wanted a camera also, but I got her an SD870IS instead. She tried my G9 and liked it, but for her, she wanted something smaller (to fit into her bag) and she did not care about RAW.

For prices, just shop around. The B&H price of $409 is fine. Amazon is the same. Don't forget to get her an SD card too.

For cases, I'm a big fan of Lowepro. I use an Apex 60AW for my G9, but they have many other choices. The new Terraclime cases look pretty neat.

Canon has the street price listed as $499 on their site so I would say $409 is a good deal.

yeah it's $500 at most electronic stores.

I took the free shipping option here in the US from Amazon and it arrived 5 business days after the order. Why pay for shipping. Amazon has the best price right now.

Thanks for all of the replies. This past weekend we visited the World Bird Sanctuary. Anyway she used my XSi. With it mostly on Auto. She is a believer in keeping it simple. Now she doesn't know what she wants. She thinks she would be bored with something she can't change the lens on. Would someone be so kind and post some photos using the G10 at 10x zoom?

I agree. Even with the shipping cost tacked on, that's not a bad price at all

The B&H price of $409 has free shipping. I just bought mine last week.

the worste thing I can say about the g10 is that it is not a dslr. sounds like your wife agrees. Get her the DSLR and hope she wants some lenses to go with it! If I could just develop some lens lust in my wife, man would my photo-life be different. They always say happy wife, happy life, but if happy wife equals big aperture glass with red rings on it, well how can you even pass up the opportunity for that?

I will soon be getting an upgrade for my wife's A630. I don't care for the 14.7 Megapixels sensor on the G10, too many MPs on such a small sensor. And while the SX1 IS and SX10 IS are not so jammed up with as many MPs (it's still too much) I can't approve a 20X zoom lens. I had a chance to get a like new G5 for under a $100 but didn't. I really think I should had bought it for her. I know it's marketing but Canon is jamming too many MPs and too long a zoom range, both I feel are not good for IQ, in their smaller cameras.

The 14.7 MP pictures look fantastic, Image quality is superb. I can crop the hell out of an Image and still have SUPER detail.

Of course the quality of a picture is subjective. I feel that if something is fantastic to one's point of view then it's fantastic, period. And, if one feels something is lacking then something is lacking. Very nice picture of a lovely young lady.
