Two from Staglieno Cemetery in Genoa, Italy:

The tomb of William White was commissioned by his wife Emilia Rosasco, and sculpted in 1905 by Luigi De Paoli.

Ten years ago I came across this grave stone in a little more or less forgotten cemetery in the western North Carolina mountains. It was fascinating to me just because the only marking was what you see. Made me wonder....what the heck is under here.

I was able to go back to it last week and found some info on the person resting here. This little stone has been here a long time. Man's name is Joseph Ballard, he lived from Nov 1794 to Nov 1884. I guess the X was all the burial guy could manage. Kind of sad.

But then, there were a tremendous number killed during the many wars that got no marker at all. Heck, some didn't even get buried.

Good story. The stone made me wonder if either Ballard or the burial guy was illiterate (“make your mark”).

Thanks

Nice one Lester, where is this?

St Tisilio Church Island, Anglesey, it is basically in Menai the main town but on a little island. Lighting was harsh that day, worth a visit on an overcast day or after the sun sets a bit.

Couple of other shots, you can see the modern bridge across the Menai straight in the background.
