Kacey BD users, how do you mount it to an elinchrom light? I have the norman elinchrom adapter, is that going to work? I am looking into getting the BD and a quadra set up.

Jerry (Kacey) will ship it with an Elinchrom insert on request, afaik.

He has always replied to me within 1-2 days. Maybe send him a PM on the forums here, your mail might have been lost in spam abyss.

so i tried to use the quadra and the Deep octa in a wedding receiption lobby shots..

trying to drag out the ambient light from the lobby lamps and ceiling lighting and having the quadra on the lowest.. .4 power..

it turns out the quadra is still to strong for what i wanted to do.. bummed out about this..

i wanted to hand hold a shot @ ISO 800 to 1000 and balance out the ambient lobby light with subject light coming from the quadra..

so i went back to the speed light and radio poppers and it worked like a charm..

just saying... different tools for different applications and this quadra set up didn't fit for the low light application..

pham

Pham, are you using that adapter for the quadra to mount the deep octa, or is it fine straight on the tiny quadra head?

I'm assuming you were shooting with the flash plugged into the B port to get the lowest possible output. Even then, it won't go as low as a speedlight will. The quadra can get down to 8 watt seconds, but a speedlight can go down below 1 watt second at 1/128 power.

You could carry a couple sheets of ND gel and tape them in the throat of the DO in front of the adapter to knock a couple stops off the light. Would probably be easier than changing gear to speedlights and would certainly be lighter in the camera bag.

Pham, i could have told you that. I've tried it for the same application myself. However, if you have the space, a large octa pushed back a ways will give you what you need. But you need the physical space which isn't always available.

michael, you need the speed ring adaptor for the quadra head to deep octa..
that will set you back about 100 bucks i think..

haha.. thanks i found things out by trial and error..

but the ND sheet is a cool idea.. but how would you mount that? wouldn't it be right close to the bulb and melt?

i thought about putting on both baffles.but i didn't want to waste anymore time and just went with what i know best.. my poppers and speedlights..

plus i have gels on my speed lights that matches colors very well...

still learning what this cool lighting system does..

now how to fashion a gel on the quadra? with use of the deep octa?

We gel the reception lights on the 8.5" reflectors. We never tried on the deep octa. I'd think you may be able to use the gold deflector, or the opaque one and put a CTO on it, though some non-gelled would be escaping from the sides... Hmm.

Interesting... the whole idea of Elinchrom Rotaluxes being able to fold and store are based on the cool bags they include. How would you store it without the bag? (folded and fully disassembled..yuck!..or is there another way?)

+1, or if you are using the DO with inner diffuser only, you can use the Silver Deflector and that will reduce the power an extra stop (I do this all the time without affecting quality of light).
