Hi Peter!

"Worth" is very subjective, to me for sure! But i cant speak for anyone else.

The 69" is a great SB, but its not a indirect design and is not any diffrent from the 53" apart from size.

I love my Octalite and its great for location work(I use it more then any of my rotalux boxes on location) like weddings,at least for the style/type im shooting during the season.

Regards
Paul L.

Thanks Paul. You're right, worth is subjective depending on one's needs. Once again great gear.

How much weight do you use to keep the 53" octa from blowing over? I'm getting a Ranger and am hoping to do some similar setups outdoors with it.

Im not sure if the question was aimed at me ?

But if it was...

I rarely use the 53" Octa on location, and the softbox seen in the images and the one i refer to is the Elinchrom Octalite (2 meter indirect bank)

In this image you can see its mounted on a Manfrotto 3370 stand with a Manfrotto deadweight 022 (6,7 KG).

For a 53" you can get away with less, of course depending on the conditions.

Great pics! I love how far the Quadra throws light. How was the sun in this shot? And I agree, remote Skyport triggering is sexy.

Thanks. The sun was almost gone at this point, last few shots from our brief test shoot.

Cool stuff Mazza!

Thanks very much. It's the middle of Winter here in Oz, so still lots of time to get acquainted with the Q's abilities before the wedding season starts. The adaptor I've ordered is definitely a must have item, can't see myself relying on bare bulb for much longer
Cheers

i'm thinking about a twin head quadra set up as my first set of lights. i appreciate that may seem a little overkill but i don't want to upgrade again too soon. i'd like to shoot cars on location so i'd be interested to see how they cope with that - enough power etc.

Just to let people know, most Q (apart from the softbox) accessories are in stock in higher quantities here i Sweden (yes the adapter to) so its hopefully not to long for those who have stuff on pre-order.

Im gonna call my UK dealer tomorrow, if they dont have a delivery time due to next week, ill just pick them up locally.

First impressions with  guess what.......

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2447/3706352418_474abea622_o.jpg

Here it is!! The big box delivered from Vistek (thanks Henry!!) Seriously fast shipping (2 days FedX shipping from Canada to NYC). Price is cheaper than Amazon if you include tax/shipping. So happy!!

Here is the inside: WOHOOO!!!

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2586/3706352554_34ba8842a2_o.jpg

This is the case. It was not packed in an Elinchrom box.....kinda surprised. It's a fairly sturdy case - might use it mainly for storage, don't see myself traveling with this case too much. Will definitely invest in something with wheels.

Open sesame!!

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2609/3706352718_7cca8f9e0b_o.jpg

I like how the case keeps everything in place. 2x A heads, 2x Battery, 1X Quadra, Skyport and 2x wires. It is also fairly compact so it can easily fit between tight spaces. You don't really appreciate the size of these heads until you have them in your hands, they are small and compact. BUT I will say again that protective caps should've been included in the package. My biggest gripe at the moment is you can't even get a cap for the Quadra unless you put the adaptor and use the larger cap for regular heads - this completely defeats the purpose on keeping these heads small and not bulky when traveling on location (which is what these heads are for!!) Come on Elinchrom, give us a small/flat protective cap for these puppies!!

IMAGE: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3476/3705544179_16d2a92853_o.jpg

I feel that the heads are very delicate (could be due to its size). Removing the reflector is a bit tight and will require some strength, the button push/twist format is not as intuitive for me as of yet - maybe I will get used to it in the future - the reflector also seemed stuck when removing and attaching, something I wish would loosen up overtime. The flash tubes are so close to the edges that I sometimes feel I would accidentaly break or touch it (this is especially true when attaching the adaptor). Modeling light - love it!! It is bright enough when shooting indoors - and it's LED (?) so it must last a lifetime right?? The A heads gives a nice POP when activated.

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2561/3706352934_7d4e3ca480_o.jpg

The battery: WOW!!! I've seen the regular ranger and this is SMALL!! Changing settings on this thing will require some memorization - seriously!! I can't see the logic between the "menu" and "sub-menu" button and how many times you press each one to change settings. My advice: Always bring the manual!! The battery itself took me a bit of time to install - it was a bit stiff and awkward when pushed together, the one side clicked easily enough but the other side took a bit of time to attach - hmmm... Removing them also requires a bit of skill - (push-down small buttons and push in).. I hope that the plastic (?) things holding the battery in place will last.... it seems a bit delicate.

One test shot:

INFO: Top light (main) - 8 inch reflector with Grid, bottom light - small strip softbox for fill (On the floor angled up using books - this is why these heads are so great!!). Lowest power setting (f9, ISO100)
Please don't judge the technical merits :p Just wanted to try a quick and dirty shot in my tiny living room....... All in all, I can't wait to start using this thing........ it's getting me excited about photography again..... and that's a test of a great product. Thanks Elinchrom!!

Got my adapter from the UK today, and picked up the cables and the 18cm Q reflector locally since UK didnt expect them for another 2-3 weeks. Its a blessing to live in a small country sometimes.. .-)

Will try out the adapter later today, will be interesting to mount the 70cm Elinchrom BD on it... :-)

As for the recessed flashtube in the adapter, its actually not recessed (not fully) the tube is portruding slightly from the reflector (in the adapter) wich is a few mm less then on every other compact/head elinchrom makes. So the loss in light some are afraid of will simply not be there in practical porpotions if any.

Just took apart the swivel mount on the adpater, and im quite amazed how stupid one can be to come up with such a unsufficent "design" will replace some washers and im quite sure it will improve.

The mount in it self will hold a 100cm wide/deep modifier, the problem is with the poor friction between the plastic and the rubber washer so when you tighten the swivel mount the adapter tend to "glide". Unless you overtighten the mount to the point you will risk breaking it.

Ill post some images of it later, and make sure to post some images when iv replaces some washers.

Would be interested to see your report on this. I tried using the adaptor with the deep softbox and I couldn't get it to stay put (it kept creeping down) - I had to overtighten the darn thing and was afraid it will break!!

Here are some images:

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2481/3715942404_1740afa295_o.jpg

And some samples: All these are shot (f11 ISO 100. I think I took out the outer baffles to simulate a large BD).

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2651/3715133187_198596ccd4_o.jpg

Next shot includes 2 BXrI with grids for side highlights.

.........all in all, I am very happy with the Quadras.
