It looks that way to me too Dave. However, I know that when I use a beauty dish it's always on a boom or an arm and it would never be an issue.

Same here, Robert. There's always a short extension arm on a grip head involved.

Very nice job Paul. Can you show an image to illustrate what you had to cut on the Manfrotto adapter?

Hi Robert, sorry for the confusion, i had to cut a few mm at the end of the metal bracket on the Elinchrom adapter, no modification was done to the manfrotto adapter.

Rudi wrote in post #8278027 (external link)
This is just sloppy engineering on Elinchrom's part! I mean, seriously, how hard would it have been to do properly in the first place? ???

(And now I have a post to show people when they accuse me of only bashing Paul C. Buff products. :D).

Yes Rudi this is an absolut "brain fart" on Elinchroms part, sad thing is the D-lites, BXRi shares the same mount.

Im gonna email my dealer and provide some images to further explain that without altering the adapter it wont hold a deep octa as claimed.

No product/manufacturer is perfect, Elinchrom is no exception. Two "minuses" on the Quadra is the adapter and the lack of protective cap, iv let my dealer know how feel about both.

But i agree with Robert, your a hater now.. heheh

Nice going, Paul. Two good alternatives presented here. One thing, though, it would appear from your photo of the Quadra head with the beauty dish that the ability to tilt the assembly downward is severely restricted. That is to say, it looks as if the back of the dish will hit the stand if it's angled downward even slightly. Maybe it's just an optical illusion and it really isn't as close to the riser as it seems to be. Is motion in the tilt axis adequate for most usual placements of a BD?

Thanks much,

Dave F.

Hi Dave!

Yes its quite restricted, this due to the fact that the Quadra head with adapter is ALOT shorter then a compact or a ranger head. But as Robert mentioned a BD is most likley used on a boom anyway, since with a BD this large the tilt movement will be restricted regardless what head you use.

Also the 70CM BD isnt the modifier i will use very often with the quadra, the whole benefit of portability is gone once you drag that with you. :-) And when i do use it on location i will use it with the Ranger RX and a boom.

Paul L.

Paul - thanks for the pictures. Nice modding - yes a bit annoying we have to do this. So the metal locking washer doesn't really locK or key against anything right...ie. its just the ridges that provide extra friction?

Hi!

The locking washer provide extra friction and since the swivel mount housing is in plastic the ridges "locks" fast, but dosent stick when you losen the pressure. Works quite well, and i dont think it will weare that much over time. But if one wants to be sure just use the Manfrotto "mod".

Also the locking washer need to be on the left side of the metal bracket, the rubber washer is originally on the right side. This due to the large hole on the right side, the locking washer will just go right thru. But if you find a locking washer that is the same size as the rubber washer, and have the same hole diameter you can have it on the left side.

I just picked these in the first store i went to, i didnt really shop around.

Paul, thanks alot for sharing your infos and pictures.

I've finally received the adapter yesterday and mounted the Deep Octa and the adapter tilted. I had to tighten it quite strong that it did not tilt anymore. I'll give the normal adapter a try but am already thinking of applying your mod.

Also, i am quite happy with the 18cm reflector. The standard 13cm reflector is so small and so wideangel, the 18cm is a lot bigger and not so much wideangel. I think i will use the 18cm as a standard reflector when shooting outdoor in sunlight (like next saturday at the beach).

I'm surprised the beam of the 20° grid is really narrow (i'm not used this from my Honl grid), but i wanted a narrow grid anyway, so i'm looking forward to use it also...

Regards,
Martin

Hi Martin!

Yes the 18cm reflector is very nice, i use a 30° wich is a little wider, havent had time using them much though, so it will be fun to see what one can do with it.

For one of you with both reflectors and a grid, I know this is asking a lot, but could you:

Shoot a portrait of a person's face, with a 45 degree angle of the light (typical portrait light placement) against a wall so that their head shadow is visible, with A) 13cm reflector B) 18cm reflector C) 18cm reflector with grid ???

I would love you forever, or at least till I forget about the big favor you did.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.....but it's ironic that the BXri, RX series monoblocs comes with protective cap and no reflector when these lights usually live on lightstands in the studio and the Quadra heads - which are meant to travel comes with a reflector but no protective cap. Come on Elinchrom!!

Although Elinchrom doesn't make a protective cap, I've discovered Corning Ware makes one that works pretty well. I'll post a photo when I have a chance.

Gotta love the housewares department! Corningware makes a bowl whose cover fits the hood of an EF 500mm f/4L PERFECTLY. Meanwhile, the cover to a Pyrex 2 cup bowl fits over an Elinchrom mount equally PERFECTLY. Local store security probably thinks I have some kind of Rubbermaid fetish.
