Great thread.

Hoping ive not missed the boat and all those wanting discussion have left by now.

Im wanting to do a range of things, however ive seen only mostly photos of people with the quadra for example, Im also wanting to do more of an automotive side of things, and wondering if ayone uses theres often for car shoots and so forth. It seems 2 quadras would be better for this than an RX with huge amounts of cable lol!

I only have this shot. screw'd if i remember the settings, was just playing around with levels and being out in sunlight (not shade).
One light infront of car and one on the side, both from the one power pack. camera settings I forget (to lazy right now to look em up) sorry,
Quadras great small lights easy to throw around and easy to use.

Hope that helps ???

Yeh it's just the suns shadow, and as I said I dont know the settings ? so I can't say if it was or was not full power. also keep in mind this its in direct sun light (overcast).
Still 400watts will be enough power for car photography.

I would be interested to see what others use for this as well.

O yes of course I understood you didnt know the settings, i was just hypothesizing that IF that was at full power then I may be struggling. Long term i plan to go for two of them so have either two 400w laps or 2x 266 and 2x133 to give some different styles/lighting options. But want to see if I can get by short term only spending £1350 on a twin head kit, rather than 1600 for a single head ranger RX when ill then need to buy skyports etc.... I might do a specific car lighting thread as i suspect this thread being old will be ignored.

NOT cars and not the best (those would prob. be unsuitable for this thread as was a Boudoir shoot) but here are a couple with my new Quadra through a Deep Throat (with inner baffle only) from this last week;

The Quadra was VERY useable with very shallow dof at 8.2 Ws on Ch. B. I shoot very shallow with Boudoir and the light was very controllable and soft.

The Ranger AS Speed pack will go lower than that when connected to the B port. (Just to keep the "Elinchrom Quadra or Ranger?" comparison going...)

Don't think I made ANY comparison or assumptions, just wrote about my joy with the compact and portable new Quadra.
NO doubt many others can go lower etc., I am just happy with the results from this one.

No worries, Nick. I wasn't having a go at you, just mentioning the fact for those who click on the thread but don't read it in its entirety. After all, most people who click on this thread are trying to decide between the two Rangers...

another real-usage question - did anyone experience missfires or curtain sync issues with Quadra+skyport?

I did few shoots already, and noticed few blank frames (which could be i fired sooner than the recycle was done), but also few partial exposures, as if you go over sync speed of the camera (1/250 on D300), for which i don't have explanation..

I've just switched channels from 1 to 8, so will see if that helps, but if anyone experienced this, i'd be glad to hear the outcome/solution.. (hope my quadra is not faulty)

thanx

Are you raising the shutter speed to try to cut back on ambient light? If not then why push the shutter speed? Why not work at a more conservative and very safe speed of 1/125s or 1/160s?

I don't know if the Quadra lets you sync at higher speeds than RX monolights but when I use the Skyports with RX's and my D700 I can only safely sync at 1/160s. If I push it to 1/200 I get a hint of shutter curtain and if I go to 1/250 I start to get more of a black band from the curtain.
