Hey Rudi, have you missed me? I have been recuperating since last September from 2 shoulder operations. Getting old is painful. I purchased a Quadra last year with the A head. Robert made some excellent points as to why he wouldn't buy the Quadra, but I had to have it. After the strengthening mods, I have to say it is excellent. It is nice and light and has plenty of power for what I do. I am recuperated enough to get back to shooting regular and am looking forward to working again. Still love the Rangers.....

Hey I can see my house from there!

Did my first shoot with the Quadra. Being able to control power with with Skyport was really nice vs. manually changing everything on my speedlights. And Quadra head does a better job with simulating sun, a look a like to do.

Nice shot there, glad to hear your Quadra came away pretty much scratch free.

I was shooting Georgia with her facing the softbox and then went to take setup shot and liked how the lighting with sb behind her and accent right looked more like realistic sun:

Cracking shot.

also had my first Quadra trauma lol. Too lazy to pull out the sandbags, I just hung a Vagabond on the stand to act as dead weight b/c it wasn't windy

I was going to ask if the VB was just a weight! LOL

when I started shooting. Well wind kicked up and knocked over the softbox setup TWICE. First time fell backwards into the shrubs and I picked up and kept shooting. Then it fell backwards right onto concrete from 8ft high. Thought for sure bulb was blown but still worked fine. Only damage was an abrasion to back of the cable. IMO, since there's not much to the Quadra head there's less chance of damage.

Yeah, there's not much weight up there.

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

I've finally joined this group!

It's taken me a few weeks of reading and an interesting thought process, but I came out with the Quadra A Set and have just a DO on order to start off the addiction.

I must echo what everyone has said today regarding this thread and community. I've been a POTN member for around 4 years under another alias and I never really left the Camera / Lens sections of the forums and had a total of around 100posts. I liked the information available on the site but the community was odd to say the least and it never really felt comfortable?

Since I've joined the POTN Aussie Thread and focussed my attention more on the lighting side of this site I couldn't be happier. I'll admit the lighting people are far more friendly / approachable than the people that regulate the Lens forum in particular.

Anyway, enough of the mini rant, the first impressions of the Quadra are great. The supplied box / transport case seems quite sturdy and everything fits in there quite well. The couple of test shots I've taken in my room I can see my photography growing far more than with the speedlights (mainly due to the on camera power control).

I've read through this entire thread and basically all of the Elinchrom ones on POTN and was wondering why noone ever mentions the Reflection Cloth for Octa Deep Softbox.

It seems like it could be quite handy for the Quadra heads that lack that little bit of power, and to add some contrast to the DO shots?

Excellent, young Luke.

Where did you order the DO from - B&H?

Most excellent, although it may not have enough power to overpower the sun where you are - I've seen a lot of your shots that look like you get sun there like we do down here. (Which is why I've got the Ranger on order.)

But the Quadras are just beautiful little lights.

The "A" head has a shorter duration light than the "S", making it better for freezing motion, etc.

Most people seem to buy the "A" heads - they're not that much more expensive when you're buying the kit.

ed. wrote in post #10586117 (external link)
I think better to get Ranger RX + Quadra instead of 2 x Quadra.

A vs S head.
Get atleast one A head for when you need to freeze action ;)
A = Action head
S = Standard head

That's the easiest way to explain the heads LOL

Thanks for the advice guys!!!

Exactly Ed. The amount of people in there I assume just read forums and articles all day long and never take a photo will never cease to amaze me.

Excellent, young Luke.

Yeah Mic, B&H, it only cost me just over $300 shipped with a bag so not much more than a lot of the ebay ones.

Also just did some standard testing with the Skyport - Speed Transmitter, I can get 1/320 without any black banding and 1/400 with about 1/15 of the image having a black band consistently at the bottom of the image (easily usable). This is without any receiver delay, which will be interesting to fiddle with.

Ed will be thrilled you've got the bag, I was talking to him on the phone yesterday about how important they are :-)

Hahah, for me the bag will be useful. Being able to clip it on slide it under my backpack while I trek somewhere will be alot easier if it's a proper fit and should take better care of it.

Ed is unconvinced about the optical properties of the bags, but I love them :-)

Hey Tommy, welcome back! Hope the shoulders are getting better every day. I know all about shoulder operations, my dad's had both shoulders operated on (they were both in pretty bad state), the second operation only recently. He still has several months of physio and whatnot ahead of him. Just between the two of us... if it's up to me, I'd like to skip that part, if at all possible. ;) I hope both of mine hold up for another 50 years or so....
